Kari had what some might call a knack for getting into trouble. Part of it was being from a family rich enough to have full time personal bodyguards. Part of it was the places his obsession curiosity about the arcane got him. But most of it was just... his personality.
Valesport wasn't a safe city to be in, and Kari wasn't used to playing it safe to begin with. He'd had dozens of close calls, but rather than them making him more cautious, each one just sharpened his skills at squirming out of trouble through a combination of charm, underestimation, and just flat-out cash. The better he got at buying and lying his way out of trouble, the less scared of trouble he was. Oh, he still acted with an appropriate respect to those who had right to expect it, sure, but he'd long since stopped being scared of them. And Kari's list of "those who have right to expect respect" was perhaps shorter than some of Valesport's less powerful might wish.
Kari's bodyguard was nearby, taking care of one of those unfortunate few who absolutely refused to be bought or charmed. Kari had excused himself to a different alleyway, because he wasn't a fan of violence, disliked gore, and also was wearing a brand new skirt and had no desire to get blood on it or his heels. He was far enough away that he didn't have to hear any of the more visceral sounds of violence, as well. Instead, he lit up a smoke, leaned his forearm against a wall, waiting.
