They met on their lunch break, the air crisp, the restaurant mostly empty. They sat on the patio, beneath an umbrella with stylized french phrases decorating the segments. There were four of them, each dressed to suit their positions at their place of work.
Kade wore a pencil skirt, thigh highs, pumps, and a blouse that did little to shield her ample chest from the sights of anyone caring to look. Jayce wore a set of joggers, a crop top that brought attention to her abs, and a pair of sneakers in desperate need of cleaning. Tommy wore a cream-colored slip dress beneath a long trench, knee boots the color of coal, and a pair of sunglasses that were comically oversized on her powder-white face. Teague wore a Misfits t-shirt that was older than she was, a pair of shredding black skinny jeans, doc martins, and a beanie which did little to squash her wild mane of red hair.
They were friends, mostly.
Kade and Jayce had been friends as long as either could remember. Jayce met Teague a few years before their gathering. Tommy was Kade's friend from economics and is currently the only woman she had ever kissed on the lips. Jayce also kissed Tommy, but no one else knew. Teague kissed Tommy often, with tongue, in hopes of inspiring patrons of bars to pay for their drinks.
Tommy had kissed more women than men. It was a friendly thing to do.
As they settled in, each held a phone in hand. That was one of the rules. Their meetings needed a focal point, something to gossip about, and in the modern age of cellular technology, the best thing anyone had to offer was receipts via text groups or candid photos or whatever might be stumbled upon.
Kade's entry was a coworker looking at porn at work.
"Rodney really doesn't give a shit anymore." The image was tame until one took a closer look at the subject matter of the video playing, two very large men taking turns on what looked to be someone's grandfather. Several penises worth of confusion earned a cackle from Jayce, who started this journey with a mimosa and had already upgraded to a long island iced tea. Jayce was an alcoholic.
"It's because he works for that Doug douche. Everytime I hear about Rodney, it's always 'oh, Rodney is telling me Doug's foot fungus fetish is gross and he won't stop showing me pictures of Doug licking the bottoms of shoes.' Like, remember thinking office work would be boring? When are you ever bored with someone like Rodney there to keep you entertained." Jayce swiveled, one of her arms hanging over the back of her chair while her legs spread wider for comfort.
"I want my own Rodney. I really do. I'd tell him all my secrets and let him braid my hair."
"Hate to break it to you, but Kade is your Rodney." Tommy sipped water, her smile hidden behind the glass. She stuck her pinky out when she drank. It was cute in a cringey way.
Teague hadn't said anything yet because her AirPods were in, hidden beneath tufts of hair, blaring MSI unironically.
When Kade noticed, she issued a kick under the table but caught Tommy's shin instead, earning a squeak from the petite goth.
"OW! Why, Kade?!"
"Teague, take your fucking headphones out-"
"I can hear you just fine," Teague lied, staring off toward the street. She had no juicy gossip to share. She just enjoyed being with the group.
"Fuck, when you get quiet, you remind me of my roommate. Like, I'm not sure why, but it's the same vibe. I feel extra bossy."
"Thanks?" Teague eyed Kade for a long several seconds before asking, "What was his name again?"
"Akash." Kade and Jayce, in unison, answered. Following, both leaned closer, suddenly conspiratorial.
"Do you want to meet him?" Kade asked, grinning.
"He'd break you," added Jayce, a tinge of smugness to her tone.
"Like he broke Kade?" Tommy, so serene, shrugged before reminding them, "You've seen him if you've seen her OnlyFans. The important part of him, anyway."
"Monster cock has a name?" Teague clicked her tongue a few times before asking, "How is he single? He's like, what, 6 and a half feet tall, and he's got the biggest cock someone can take without dying. Is he slow? Does he sniff glue? What's the deal?"
Kade was blushing over her rosé, committed to one glass because her work day wasn't over for another few hours.
"He's had girlfriends. Y'know, like, uh… yeah, I'm not sure why they didn't work out. We snuggled more than we talked. Rebounding was chaining something on netflix while we run the stream."
Jayce snorted.
"You never even offered to hook me up with Akash."
"You'd hurt him." Kade sounded too serious as she exhaled a deep sigh. "But maybe he'd be fun for a quickie. You love those."
"Ouch, Kade." Jayce shook her head, no more deterred than she was sober. It worked wonders for her mood. "I know I'm not looking for wedding bells but I can be good, too. Doesn't have to be a train wreck."
"I just worry about him. He's very special to me."
Teague picked at a spot at the table with her nail, listening. Tommy swiped through a group text, nodding.
"Well, consider him safe. I might be seeing someone." Jayce, confident to a fault, added with a giggle, "And he's such a fucking weirdo, I can't get over it."
"How so?" Tommy perked up, drawn to the word 'weirdo' in the same way Kade perked up when someone said 'daddy'.
"Like, you know. Spooky shit. Your sort of shit, for sure."
Tommy hummed a laugh. "My sort of shit?"
"…Goth stuff?" Kade asked, a hesitant huff included.
"Yeah, sure. Goth stuff. Vampire stuff. Weirdo stuff." Jayce slapped her hand on Teague's outstretched leg, falling mid thigh. "Teague, you like goth shit too?"
"No."
"What do you call what you're into?"
"What the fuck is this, high school? I don't call it shit."
Jayce's hand removed itself slowly.
"Fine, be snippy. I just thought you wanted some attention."
Kade tutted, her eyes seeking the wait staff to see how progress was coming on lunch.
"I hope I'm not late getting back. My boss doesn't like when I take too long with lunch."
"Your boss?" To Kade's surprise, Tommy was the one to pick at the stitches on this particular wound. "You mean Karl?"
"Yes…"
"Don't you call him something else?"
"No…"
Teague groaned, watching the women dissect one another in hunger-fueled pettiness.
"Kade, we saw you two on that stream. Daddy's cock this, Daddy's cock that- I don't personally care what you call him, but dude, like- damn. He's your boss to other people. He's like, uh, your boyfriend to us."
Kade didn't respond, her ears hot as they flushed with color. Jayce 'awww'd' to fill the silence.
"It's cute," Tommy remarked, fanning herself with one hand. "and I speak for all of us when I say we're looking forward to the wedding."
"And I have a picture of Remy smoking a crack pipe." Jayce scrolled through a mountain of nudes, the likes of which everyone at the table had already seen more times than they could count, until she paused on a middle-aged walrus of a man with a crackpipe hanging from his lip. "I've been using it to get free tickets to late shows."
"I didn't even know you liked Judge Jerry." Kade swallowed a bit more wine, considering what Jayce said while politely acting like she hadn't seen someone's tongue buried in her best friend's ass. "Or did you mean The Charm Factor?"
"Honestly, I like to hang out in the crowd and chill between gigs. I've been on Jerry and Charm and this one that isn't airing yet- Whose Man Cheated? It's as trashy as it sounds but the makeup area is so bougie, I kinda hope the show doesn't get canceled right away."
"You're a makeup artist, right?" Tommy blinked her long lashes for a few seconds, digesting the information. "I thought you did what Kade does. Streams and Onlyfans."
"She does both," Kade mused, her features tweaked with a smirk. Was it pride?
"Dude, okay, listen to this. I do the OnlyFans stuff but it's so fucking boring most of the time, I don't update as often as I should. Kade has a roommate into it but I've been flying solo for like a year. It's not like I want to drag someone else into it, either. I don't like feeling reliant." Jayce's hand shot up in the air, finger spinning, a great distraction for the waiter to make note of. Obnoxious blonde needs more liquor, stat.
"I'm much too shy for that." Tommy had finally relinquished hold of her water, ready to two-hand her cell phone. Even a phone looked big where it sat against her pale palms. "Worried my students would stalk my online content. That or I'd make a match with someone perfect for me, just to lose their interest because my nudes are all over. I'm not sure it matters now, but at one point, I expected backlash for even the slightest show of immorality."
"Tommy, baby, you teach a pottery class. They don't care." Drunk Jayce sighed deeply, reaching out to stroke Tommy's fair forearm. "Just say you think we're trashy. No need to pretend we're not. We're the trashiest people I know."
"True. Remember when Kade got her nipples pierced?" Teague held up one hand to pause her thought, the other frantic as it searched through photos. Countless photos. Professional quality photos.
"Here- yeah, here-" Teague held out a portrait of Kade, her brow knit, her lips parted, her hips trained in mid gyration. Her breasts were exposed, one held by a medical gloved set of fingers. More fingers were pushing a needle through the nipple, the action forever trapped in time.
"I can't believe you took that-"
"And this one, too." The next photo was Kade, freshly pierced, being kissed by none other than Tommy. Open mouth, their tongues in tandem, Kade's blood being wiped away from the barbell laced wounds. Jayce was hovering nearby, not daring to look. "Jayce about to hurl."
"Nah nah nah- I just can't deal with blood, alright? It's gross."
Tommy chuckled to herself, leaving Kade to field the next question.
"Teague, do you ever think about doing more than street photography?"
"What's that?" Tilting to the side, Teague remarked, "I can't hear you over the sound of wedding bells. Wow, they're so loud over here!"
"What? Oh my gosh, no- it's not funny, guys!" Kade turned away in a huff, one foot tapping lines of irritation across the sidewalk as the other jiggled impatiently. "You're very good at it and I thought you might be interested in commercial work."
"Kade has, like, this need to mother everyone. She sees you taking shots of bums fighting in the park and she thinks 'oh golly gosh, Teague should start working for corporate!' Don't worry about it too much. We've all been told at one point or another we should be working for Aachen."
Kade's gaze pleaded with Jayce, but there wasn't anything to argue. Jayce was right. She really did try and con everyone she knew into working where she worked.
"It's a good job," Kade whined. She might have whined more if their meals hadn't finally arrived, held balanced in the arms of a young man with prominent acne.
To each, a plate. Kade with her club sandwich, Tommy with her tortellini, Jayce with her chicken salad sandwich, and Teague with her basket of fries.
"I'm sure it's fun as fuck, Kade, but you're basically living in a rom-com right now. Rose-tinted glasses. Your hot foreign boss turned boyfriend/future husband isn't gonna hook us up with the same benefits as you." Jayce wagged a finger but a mouthful of sandwich delayed the rest of her message. "Mm- unless he's got- Mmmm- a brother or three. Since Tommy and Teague are prudes, I'll take all his brothers so long as they're hot and hung."
Teague groaned with renewed disappointment.
"Holy hell, you are the biggest thot I've ever met."
"I'll have you know I'm quite charming."
"And really attractive," added Tommy with a sage nod.
"Yeah, that too. Tommy thinks I'm hot."
Scarfing down her sandwich, Kade double-checked the time, her eyes widening at what she noticed.
"Oh fuck, I'm gonna be late."
"Text him?" Tommy had barely gotten to eating, a piece of pasta speared at the end of her fork. "You can tell him we say hello."
"If I hadn't seen his dick, I wouldn't believe he was real." Jayce nudged Teague with her elbow to ask, "Doesn't he sound fake?"
"A little. Like, it's weird we've never met him." Teague picked at her fries, a side plate covered in ketchup. "Does he not like us?"
"It's not like that. I just haven't… Well, you know. It's all so new. I didn't want to overwhelm him."
"Did he meet Theo last time he visited?" Jayce stole a fry to nibble at. "I had a chance to see him and we caught up. He's so goofy though. Every time I let him take a hit, he'd start giggling like a dweeb. I had to drop his giggly ass at his hotel because I was tired of him messing with the cd player. He made me listen to Free Falling like 15 times."
"I like Theo," Tommy said with a nod.
"Theo likes you guys, for sure. I bet if he was local, he'd want to hang out with us."
"Opposite of Kis."
Kade shot Jayce a quick look, a flash of panic behind her eyes.
"She's got her own stuff to deal with."
"Hey, Teague-" Jayce lowered her voice, her comment meant only for the women at the table, "Kismet is the biggest thot I've ever met. She impresses me."
"Okay, don't tell them about-"
"Like, one time we were out skiing. She only hits the bunny slopes. She's not actually there to ski. Kade and Theo and I were basically up and down the mountain for the better part of a day, right? By the time we're done, we head inside the lodge and disperse, off to our rooms. Kade was sharing with Theo, I was with Kismet. Well, I crack open the door a peek and what do I see?"
"Jaaaaaaayce-"
"It's Kismet and she's got these two instructors down to their boots, both their cocks shoved in her mouth. She's going to town, jerking and sucking and licking up precum and-"
"Oh god, Jayce, don't-"
"And she stops because she sees me. Guess what she says?"
"…what'd she say?"
"She says, 'Jay, sit on Dolf's face because he keeps talking and it's distracting me!'"
Kade rose to stand, slapping down two 20s for the bill.
"Thank you for reminding me of something I never wanted to relive."
"Awww, don't be that way. Kismet is fun, and- honestly- that Dolf guy really didn't shut the fuck up until I was sitting on his face."
"Oh, fucking hell." Teague stood as well, forever groaning as her mind tried to process everything said. "I'm out of here. Face sitting lunch special appreciated but I need some air."
Jayce's cackling followed the pair headed back uptown, the streets congested with people fleeing one responsibility for another. The pair hadn't meant to travel together but they happened to be headed in the same direction, toward Kade's work and Teague's mystery spot.
"Is Jayce always like that?" Teague knew Jayce first, but they mostly smoked pot and played Xbox. The unhinged drunk Jayce was more new than not. "Especially about your sister… that's fucked up."
"Ah, I don't know. Kismet doing immature stuff to get attention has always been part of her personal ethos. Jayce sort of follows the same code, more or less. She's loud and she's wild, but she's like… the best friend I can have. Aside from Akash, but like, don't tell her that. She'll get pissy."
"Yeah, everyone keeps talking about Akash. Is he, er… Y'know." Teague's accent struggled with slang enunciations, making the most informal messages sound precise. "Is he your back up?"
"No." Kade shied her gaze, her hands fidgeting with her phone. "I don't know what I'd call it, really. I love him but… yeah. It's complicated."
"Would it be cool if I…?"
Kade came to a stop, settling her gaze on the shorter redhead. For all the effort Teague didn't put into her appearance, she was still beautiful. Full lips, long lashes, a cute french nose. The blonde managed a smile, albeit a sad one.
"I'll send you his Facebook, okay? Can't exactly check if he has a Tinder but you might find someone in the area who fits his description. Who knows?"
Who knows?"
