Mother and son led the two guests into the home and down a hallway lined with family photographs. The hallway opened up into a spacious kitchen. The windows were propped open and let a fresh spring breeze. The smell of the air told Owen everything he needed to know in terms of what was going on in and around the ranch. He knew where the cattle were and that there was no danger of any escapes in that still unmended portion of fence he had abandoned. He had some time to kill with their curious clients.
Owen half turned his face back to the women behind as he walked at the question that the more chipper blonde asked. There was something disapproving on his face as if she had asked the dumbest question. “Has anything ever always been in someone’s family?” He mumbled sarcastically to himself as he turned back.
His mother hit his arm hard with the back of her hand. Even though it likely hadn't hurt him much. He shrugged his shoulder in an exaggerated motion as if to defend himself from her and then rubbed at the afflicted area as if greatly pained by the one swat. “Owen.” She scolded and then pushed playfully at her large son, shoving him forward and into the kitchen. “Get some glasses down.” She waved her hands dismissively at him.
“Don’t pay him any mind. The ranch as we know it today was obtained just after the Free Homestead Act in 1862. As far as we have been able to trace back we've found that the first Hart came this region working for a British fur trading operation as early as 1760 or so.” Ishara explained pleasantly to the women.
“And we’ve been here ever since.” Owen said as glasses clinked onto the counter.
“That’s right.” His mother agreed while she opened the fridge to produce a pitcher of tea. It was attractively presented with perfect circles of lemon floating in amber liquid. Ishara filled the glasses and Owen gathered one up to hand it off to Julianna.
“That’s a nice camera.” He told her as he passed the glass to her. His voice was low in volume when he spoke almost as if he wished to have a private word with her. A comment just for her. “Pretty big for a little woman.” The pull at the corner of his mouth suggested he was teasing. Normally he would have loved to talk family history with curious guests but today he couldn't focus on anything but this woman and that creepy crawly feeling she gave him in his spine.
