“Did you get the email I sent you?”
Julianna had been talking to her fiancé for twenty-five minutes. She knew this, because she had him on speaker and she was staring down at the dimly lit screen of her phone and watching the seconds pass by in real time. Her chin was propped up by her hands, which were propped by her elbows on the desk.
Admittedly, she had mostly been suffering through the conversation. She was very busy, she had a thousand photos to go over from a fashion show the previous night. Jean-Etienne knew this. He knew she was right at the most important part of her work day. Jean-Etienne didn't care.
“Julianna.”
He said her name sharply, because she hadn't responded to his question quick enough. She blinked away the blur of staring at her screen from too long and lifted her face away from her hands.
“Yes, dear?”
Jean huffed on the other end of the line. “Did you get my email?” He repeated the question, slowly, as if she were a confused child and hadn't simply gotten distracted.
“I did.”
There was silence on the other end of line. She was silent.
“Well,” he snapped. “What did you think?”
Julianna leaned back in her chair and stifled a groan. She tilted her head back until she could glare up at the ceiling and mouth obscenities at it. “Of that ranch? It was nice, I guess.”
“‘Nice’ you ‘guess’?”
She sighed. “I just don't understand why you'd want to get married in Montana? We live in New York? We're honeymooning in the Virgin Islands? I don't see why we need to detour to all the way to Montana.”
In the end it didn’t matter why Jean wanted to get married in Montana, because they were getting married in Montana regardless of what Julianna thought about it. Not because she didn’t have any say in the wedding preparations (she didn’t), but because giving into her fiance was easier than fighting him.
Which is exactly why she had flown six hours from New York to Montana (with a forty-five minute layover in Denver) with her best friend and event planner. Because even though he was insisting that they get married at a rustic ranch in the middle of nowhere, Jean was apparently too busy to oversee the work himself. He cited his job and obligations. As if Julianna did not have her own job and obligations.
“Oh look,” Maeve was talking excitedly and nudging her awake. Julianna had fallen asleep in the passenger seat as she was driven to their destination. “It’s so cute,” the blonde continued, indicating that ranch that they were currently driving up on.
“Yeah,” Julianna agreed half-heartedly, turning her head to watch the field pass slowly outside her window. “Cute.”
“Do you remember who you spoke to on the phone?” Maeve asked as she parked the car. Julianna was opening her door and jumping out of the vehicle as soon as the engine had been killed. Eager to stretch her legs and not have to listen to pop music anymore. A strong breeze kicked up dust and whipped her hair around her face.
“Her name was Ishara,” she answered finally. “I’m sure someone will come to meet us.”

I fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) I want no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true) and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you.
