Cain’s own ears pinned more firmly to his head as he realized that he had unfairly chided his mother. He hadn’t meant to - he was just thrown off, weirded out, embarrassed. Cain gave her his extra special sorry cat eyes to the background of the woman giving fumbling explanations about her biological processes. Clearly she was some kind of species he hadn’t yet encountered before. Quick healing dog shifter?
His tail flicked with impatience when she suggested that she had somehow endangered his license by … being herself? Which was, at times, canine. And that's all he had treated. A canine. Nothing wrong with that. “What no?” It sounded more like he was protesting her attempts to leave. If her questionable attempt at ambulation was any sign it was not a good idea to let her wander out.
Her canine features didn’t register to Cain as necessarily special or scandalous so he was left to assume that his lab coat had not given her satisfactory coverage. She was right. There was still too much leg showing and also it was very clear that she was entirely naked under there. And bleeding.
“You won't need to leave out the back and you do need a doctor because apparently your body isn’t putting itself back together that well.” The blunt catboy had a way with words.
“Oh.” An idea struck him. “I have an extra set of scrubs in my locker I could let you borrow.” His eyes flicked to the blood staining his crisp white coat. He then looked to his mother to see if she approved of his offering. See? He could be nice. “Or just have.” He wasn’t really expecting the coat back at this point.
He backed towards the door, “I’ll be right back.” Cain whirled around and disappeared into the animal hospital. He jogged down the hall past radiology and made a sharp turn without looking and ran into his own father. “What are you doing back here?”
Owen had prevented the full collision by grabbing his son by the shoulders and stopping him. “Oh I was, uh, peaking at all the cool pictures of bones and shit.” He pointed through the window into the radiology lab where grey, black, and white images of various parts of animal skeletons were pinned up on a light backdrop for review.
Cain glanced over his shoulder and sighed. “You’re not supposed -”
“How’s the dog?” Owen interrupted his son. He knew full well he wasn’t supposed to be back there and he didn’t give a damn.
“It’s not.”
Owen was confused by his son’s answer and cocked his head questioningly. The harried catboy sighed and clawed at unruly curls around the crown of his head. “Mom needs you. I’ll be right there.” And he dashed off again to the employee break room.
Owen had an uncanny knack for figuring out building layouts and was able to find the room where the little dog had been taken into even though he was on the employee side of things. He pushed open the door, “So what do we have here -” he asked jokingly as if he were playing vet. He did it to surprise and maybe impress his wife at how he had infiltrated the employee section of the hospital. But the joke fell flat as he took in the sight of a bleeding girl wrapped in a lab coat and struggling to stand next to Julianna.
“Whoa. Um?”
