Ugh. Oh ugh. She didn't even like this much sweet in her food. Her mouth stayed in a vague sort of frown, an expression that asked, why are you still talking to me? She knew why, of course; her face just defaulted to that after years of preferring to make people feel guilty for daring to take up her space.
And now "Ren"--probably short for something, since he didn't look very Japanese--was implying she made a mistake. Honestly. How rude. Of course, she couldn't blame him, really. She was a nobody. But in her--their, apparently--business, if he hadn't heard of her, that could be just as much a sign of intense skill as intense lack of skill. Of course, cockiness would go hand in hand with smarminess. It always did.
"Oh, really?" she said, still not bothering with a smile, instead settling with a single raised eyebrow. "How interesting. I find it helps keep me focused on those late nights so I'm not tired enough to make any mistakes at all."
The terrace was a good idea, though, even if he was being as flamboyant as physically possible about it. "I can certainly think of worse ways to spend my morning," she began, but was then distracted. By Commander General Weatherfare.
It wasn't just his presence, which would have been mildly alarming on its own, because Emma just got a little jumpy around high ranking men. At least he wasn't human, which was, you know, something. She didn't even bother keeping her ears glammed at work; it had been an open secret from day one. She only bothered now when she was working outside the office, or when she had to walk by a group of soldiers or something.
But she would have been willing to just take her coffee and exist, quickly, with "Ren." If. If. The Commander General hadn't zeroed in on them with the intensity of an irritated hawk. She saw him coming, past Ren's arm, and probably paled a few more shades.
"Good... morning, Commander General," she replied after only a brief pause, the natural and comfortable smile she'd refused to give 'Agent Bell' now firmly in place on her lips. "Well, thank you for the offer, Agent Bell, but I really must--" She got a single step before the Commander General's gaze feel back to her, eyes sharp over the rim of his dark sunglasses.
It was a look that said 'do not even think about moving.'
She was thinking about it, but she froze to the spot.
