It was true what Maeve said about Owen. That he teased and tormented her because he liked her. It just may have been that he wasn’t doing it necessarily consciously. It was just something he felt compelled to do. His body and mind set themselves immediately on provoking her when he saw her. Maybe he liked the singular focus of her attention on him.
Today was no different.
Owen showed up to class, predictably, well after many others had. He never made a point in being early. He was dressed down in dark wash jeans and a t-shirt displaying his fraternity: Orelia. A black t-shirt with a grape vine printed over the left breast and the lettering of Orelia was printed in an arch above the fruit in gold letters that shimmered. Gold lettering featuring his last name HART were also printed on the back of the shirt.
He carried with him only a notebook he used for the class and his tablet. He slid into his assigned desk in front of Julianna.
It seemed for a moment that the day would be different as he didn’t say anything annoying or provocative. Didn’t greet or acknowledge her. Just slid quietly into his seat.
Until he didn’t keep his mouth shut or ignore her.
He rotated a half turn in the desk to look at her, spying nosily the notes she was pouring over. “Can I borrow a pen?” He asked, his eyes immediately swept over her outfit, they focused the longest on the barrettes that held her hair out of her face. He could feel his eyebrow raising and a smirk spreading over his face.
“I like your hair accessories there,” he said. Seemingly a compliment. Good start. “Very school-girl chic.” Annnnd he blew it. “Your outfit matches so well. Did your mom pick it out for you?” Why did this keep happening? Why did literal shit keep coming out of his mouth.
“By the way,” that’s how you knew he was going to say something really obnoxious, “Did you catch the results of the runoff elections?” Now he was really smirking. “Didn’t I tell you who the front runner was going to be?”
He’d scored some points for predicting this election result, but they often went tit for tat one-upping one another rhetorically, with political predictions, and the like. Today, he’d scored an early lead. Why he felt the need to rub it in when he was seeking to borrow a writing utensil was beyond reason.
