Though the afternoon lesson passed quickly and with very little continued direct interaction with Loch, Sanders was nonetheless left with very positive impression with the young riding instructor. Not only did she seem infinitely capable of keeping Akiko safe on a horse and entertained during her lesson, she had navigated the brief snafu with the uncomfortable phone call from Akiko’s mother with a certain social grace that put him at ease. He was trying very hard not to notice thick dark hair and the enticing southern accent and tried instead to focus on other positive attributes.
Like tight riding pants. Except he wasn’t trying to notice that either.
Or the easy way she shared smiles with his daughter and continued casually teaching as they put Artax up.
As if anticipating that she would hand it to him, Sanders held his arms out for the saddle, his fingers brushing hers as he accepted the heavy leather from her. He listened to the girls chatter as they got to know each other. He chortled behind his hand when Rapidash scorned Loch. “She’s not normally like that.” He offered. “She’s just jealous you gave all your love to Artax today.”
There was a sort of heartbroken character to Sanders’ smile when Akiko admitted to preferring his ranch to her mother’s house. Though he and Dawn had their differences he always wanted Akiko to know both of her parents. He did not want her to be the center of a struggle between adults who couldn’t get along.
He moved behind his daughter and placed both hands on her shoulders. He pulled backwards so that she would look up at him. “California has better schools.” He tried to grant her other home some affirmative characteristic but just ended up parroting something Dawn held over his head.
“Should we go to Pepper’s?” He asked to change the subject. Sanders’ favorite trashy restaurant. They served greasy food during the day and transitioned into a kind of dive bar at night with a mechanical bull. “I’m feeling like cheese fries.”
