❧❧Five Years Later❧❧
Eden never had any delusions whatsoever about the possibility of being loved in the Wilder household. That was not something she had ever come to expect, especially not from Elliot. In that regard, she took what she could get and it was never much but it was enough.
And so the adoration that grew in her for the Hart child, Ethan, that had been placed in her care took Eden by complete surprise. It wasn’t fair to place all her hope for affection into a tiny baby but it was what happened.
Eden became attached. Far more attached than ever pleased Elliot who was never shy about reminding Eden that her love of the child was inappropriate. Her excuse was ever that she had to play the part for the sake of the child’s development that he might grow to have the best potential as a suitable apprentice for Elliot.
This, of course, they both knew was a lie.
In the years that passed Eden had dedicated her time not only to managing Elliot’s expansive estate, but to raising a well-rounded and elegant young boy. Illicitly she taught the child about his parentage, his heritage, his lineage. To keep him from asking any untoward questions of Elliot, Eden was careful to remind the boy never to speak of such things around the master of the house lest he be punished. Caring for the child under Elliot’s watch necessitated a certain severity. Eden was quite strict but never more than she thought the child could understand.
And these days he understood more and more that she could only offer him a certain amount of protection. He would have to do the rest himself.
That isn’t to say that Eden didn’t try to give Ethan as normal of a childhood as possible. She did. Often at the expense of lying and deceiving Elliot.
On this particular day, Eden found that Elliot had locked himself away with his studies and she felt it was relatively safe to sneak away from the estate for a day in town with Ethan. She’d dressed the boy up like a proper gentleman in a full three piece suit with a bow tie. She also took the occasion to dress up wearing a fire engine red dress that cinched at the waist and flared out around her knees. Feeling a bit extra, she wore elegant gloves up to her elbows and a tied a scarf around her hair that sat just behind her ears and left the front of her hair exposed. When she looked in the mirror, she fancied herself a bit like Audrey Hepburn.
In town, she took Ethan to an expensive brunch, a matinee at the theatre, and finished the afternoon at the hand-made toy store. She let the child pick any toy he liked and purchased it for him. Ethan had chosen a hand-carved wooden dump truck toy.
Eden, for some reason, didn’t fear being caught that day. She’d checked for Elliot and found him rather consumed in his work. As they pulled back up in front of the estate, Eden handed the keys to the valet to the Jag she’d chosen to drive. She knelt down before they entered the main doors and combed her fingers through Ethan’s hair. “Take that toy straight to your room and hide it. You’re only allowed to play with it in your room. Don’t go showing it off to anyone, okay, my darling?”
The child meekly agreed to her instructions and she took him by the hand to lead him inside.
Bitch, I'm limited edition.
