A brief laugh escaped Holland when Aphrodite cringed at her own past writings not because he was laughing at her but because the feeling was all too familiar to him. His eyes flicked over the way her skin pinned up on her nose. A rather adorable expression. “I think we can spare one another our embarrassing master’s theses.”
He was more than aware of her gaze on his lip piercing and he briefly worried that she disapproved. The feeling passed quickly as she seemed merely transfixed by his toying with it. With her gaze downturned, he studied the fall of her lashes that framed her eyes for the moment until her gaze returned to his. “Thank you. I just might take you up on that. My position with the CAF is part research oriented and they are pressuring me to publish something soon. Re-working something older might be easier.”
He had scarce time to react to her seemingly suggestive remark except for his eyebrows which shot up before she moved on to describing the reasons for her arrival to the U.S. “The U.K. has been very conservative on these kinds of things, although the States isn’t terribly more progressive. Just enough, I suppose.” Apparently, Holland held similar political leanings towards at least wereanimals as Aphrodite.
Holland shook his head as he moved away into the kitchen, which was really a gesture of him agreeing with Aphrodite’s unspoken judgment of the friends who had left them hanging, as it were. He could guess why. He located the bottle of wine and pulled out the cork out with a satisfying pop to refill Aphrodite’s glass with a generous pour. He watched the wine fall into her glass which spared him from staring at the perfect image she made poised against the counter with her glass out for him to serve her.
He exchanged the bottle for a beer for himself, using the opener Owen had left on the counter. Holland moved next to the blonde facing her with one hip leaning into the counter. His fingers toyed with the bottle lid on the counter, the silence filled with the clinks it made against granite.
“So do you have any kids?” He asked out of the blue. He was curious about her relationship status. Not that it was any of his business. And not that it would be any of his business in this reality. Ever. “You were very sweet with Rose so, you know, I figured...” He trailed off, unsure if the line of questioning was inappropriate or overly transparent. Usually these things were better facilitated by friends who could direct the conversation.
The feeling of Julianna’s fingers on Owen’s ear sent a tingling of electricity down his neck and up into his scalp on that side. A touch any lighter and it would have felt like a tickle. Owen didn’t know whether to lean into the feeling or pull away. His breath was hot against her neck when she touched him as he tried not to laugh. His teeth grazed her skin when his lips pulled back into an involuntary smile. He reached up and pushed her hand away pinning it to the wall next to her head. His shoulder shrugged as if to clear away the ticklish feeling which lingered at his ear even when her fingers weren’t there anymore. Too many places on his body responded that way when she touched him like that.
“No, I really think you are the one with the ulterior motives.” He insisted moving to her throat when she lifted her chin for him. “I have an unfinished beer --- and I am willing to --- sip it leisurely and --- watch my match-making unfold.” He said in fits between brief taunting kisses. He pulled his mouth away then and Owen straightened to his full height again. Without lifting her up, he had to bend down quite a bit to reach her neck. Besides it was more fun to give a little and take away again. He left her one hand pinned to the wall and his body half-pressed into hers. “It’s you who seems to have other plans for me.”
He tried to smile innocently down at her as if the prospect of a quickly warming beer and small talk was more interesting to him than whatever game they were playing in the upstairs hallway.
