"A gown," he corrected. It was an unnecessary correction. He didn't even feel that strongly about it. It was only that when she said 'dress', it felt somehow dismissive. She sounded disappointed about it. He had not labored with so many tiny stitches for anything less than awe.
A dress.
Harrumph.
He tried not to watch her strip, but as a practical consideration found himself looking at her underclothes. He'd been wrapped up enough in clothes these past few months that focusing on cloth instead of skin was easy enough.
"Not ideal," he muttered, tapping along the side of his mask's beak the way another man might tap his chin. Not her shape—though he certainly hadn't accounted for her shape—but she wasn't wearing anything half so structured as high society women preferred. And, really, anything that went higher than her nipples was going to end up visible, which would rather detract from the whole thing.
One problem at a time.
"Stand up straight, I'm going to try something." He stuck his arm out between herself and one of the lamps to cast a shadow across her middle, snapped his fingers to make it disengage and become itself, solid as the shadows that had trapped her to the floor the night before. It wound around her waist and higher, moving like a snake until it tightened all at once.
Not quite a corset, but it would keep her spine straight and her everything else… sorted. It made her a bit more dress-shaped, which was the important part.
"There—better."
