Kama Darkwillow as at a baby shower.

He wasn't particularly thrilled to be at this particular baby shower. Not because he wasn't happy for his sister. He...mostly was. Kama picked up his two-toned eyes from the half-empty drink he was swirling around to glance at Julianna and her...boyfriend. He supposed Owen was still just her boyfriend. He hadn't heard anything about a proposal. Thinking of him as a her baby daddy was rude and too modern of a slang for his tastes.

Anyway. It's not that he wasn't happy for her, strictly because she seemed absolutely elated. The whole thing was just awkward for him. A dark history and a bunch of people he didn't know milling around and enjoying snacks and drinks to celebrate and unexpected pregnancy. He did recognize Maeve, however, approaching Julianna and putting on a hand on her obviously protruding belly. The show of a few months of growth looked bigger on his petite sister.

Kama finished off the last of his punch. He moved towards the kitchen to get more. It was a larger crowd than he expected. Must have been the people she was meeting at work. It was weird to think that Julianna had a job. He bumped into someone and it pulled him out of his thoughts. "Oh, sorry," he said automatically to the redhead as she turned around to see who had collided with her. Kama blinked down at clear green eyes. They looked like moss on a wet stone. Her skin made her look like a porcelain doll with blush painted on the apples of her cheeks. "S-sorry," he said again, somehow stumbling over the simple word. He couldn't help but look a little lower. He quickly looked back up. She was wearing and off the shoulder blouse that showed off... well, quite a lot a cleavage and he didn't want to get caught starting.

He backed away from her quickly and turned on his heel. Completely forgetting that he had been going to the kitchen. He made a line straight to his sister. She stopped talking to Owen when he came up beside her.

"Hey," she said. "What's up?"

It must have been the half-panicked look on his face that alerted her need to ask. She was very intuitive for someone who was a little naive otherwise. It's not that he would say his sister was a little dumb...

But you know. If the shoe fits.

"Hey. Who's that- don't look-" he warned, before he continued. "Who's that unbelievably curvy redhead talking to that Internal Affairs lady from your work?" He was proud he remembered that tidbit about the raven-haired woman from a previous gathering. He couldn't help but think that the curvy redhead looked familiar. Kama glanced at Owen who had suddenly taken an interest in their conversation. It didn't keep him from saying, "she is literally the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Who is she?"

"That's Victoria," Julianna replied. She had to take a brief peek around him because she wasn't a mind reader.

Kama felt his throat tighten. His gaze darted to Owen and then back to Jules. "Victoria."

"Owen's sister."

”Mom, I promise, I'm fine," Julianna said for, what felt like, the twentieth time. Which was too many since this current phone call with her mother had only been dragging on for-she pulled the phone away from her face to check the timer-fifteen minutes. She opened her mouth in a silent groan as her mother chattered on nervously at the other end of the receiver. "I already have an apartment and a new job," she insisted.

She was currently driving slowly through the picturesque downtown area of her new home. Winter Heights appeared like the definition of 'small town.' Something out of a Hallmark movie. It was all cobblestone streets and historic shop windows. It even had a huge gazebo in the town center, decorated in lights. "I gotta go," she said into the phone. Effectively cutting off her mother's rant about how dangerous it was to move into a new city alone. Julianna had a hard time imagining anything dangerous happening in such a quaint town. She pulled into a gas station. "Me and Barker gotta pee."

As if on cue, the large white dog in her passenger seat uttered a series of happy yips.

Julianna hung up and leaned her head back against the seat. She signed loudly and pet Barker's head. He panted happily, dripping drool onto her seat cover and fogging up the window. Nose prints left streaks across the glass.

"Well, at least you're optimistic about it." she mused to the oversized Samoyed. Julianna got out of the car and shut the door before the dog could muscle its way past her. She left the vehicle running as she stretched out her arms and legs.

It had been a long drive from California to Colorado. Julianna had been recently let go from her previous job as a meteorologist on a national network. The circumstances were...vague at best, but she had not been in a position to really argue.

"Stooop," she commanded herself to not to get stuck thinking about the past. A torrid affair with her boss. Getting her heart broken. She took a deep breath and scrubbed her hands over her face. Curls bouncing as she did so. She squared her shoulders and gave herself a quick pep talk.

Julianna walked around to the other side of the car to let Barker out. As she moved around the back she noticed a news van parked across the street. Her brows disappeared behind her bangs, she recognized the logo as the very station she would be working for come morning.

Barker was bouncing up and down in the seat as she came into view. She opened the door slowly and reached her hand in to try and clip his leash to his harness. He jumped and put his paws up on the door, pushing it into her and knocking her flat on her ass.

"Barker!" She yelled at the dog as it bounded across the street and towards the news van. She scrambled to her feet and chased after him as he made a b-line for the unsuspecting reporter and his cameraman. "Barker, no! stop!"

Despite her husband’s protests, Julianna had a new dog.

Temporarily, at least.

She could tell by the stony expression on his face that he was cursing her affinity for living things and her ability to be woken from a dead sleep by the sound of pathetic mewling in the dark.

“I think she’s just a puppy,” Julianna said, without looking at him. It was three in the morning and she had the dog in the bathtub. Owen was standing over her, just watching her with an air of exasperation. The dog had been cold and muddy, and Jules figured a warm bath would be just the thing to help. With the muck washed off, the dog’s charming blue and black merle coat was visible and it had stopped shivering. It was pacing back and forth in the shallow water, eyes closed and tongue hanging out as Julianna washed soap off with cupfuls of water. She lifted the dog’s lips to check her teeth. “Or maybe just a mini aussie?”

Akiko’s stubby tail wiggled back and forth as she was pampered by the woman. Dog was probably her best role. It was so easy to be a cute and cheerful thing. So easily rewarded, too. Treats and being petted. What wasn’t there to like? She panted happily at the woman, and shook out her fur on cue. Tossing droplets of water all over the woman, who laughed.

At present, the shapeshifter sensed only two obstacles in her current plan. One was the tall blonde man currently looming over them as she tried to enjoy a nice bath. And the second was the stoic German Shepherd laying obediently in front of the bathroom door. It did not seem to like her.

The woman’s twin Borzois had only sniffed at her paws curiously before trotting off to their beds.

Owen remained in the bathroom, silent and watchful, because also despite his protests Julianna was sitting on the hard tile floor. She knew it was bad for her hip and her leg which had recently suffered traumatic injuries that she was still rehabilitating.

When she was finished he helped her up. She ignored the persistent pain and kept her face neutral to not upset him. “We can take her to Cain’s office tomorrow to see if she has a microchip,” she suggested, in an attempt to make him frown less. Which was a gamble given his attitude about Cain. She handed him a towel to wrap the dog up in.

“She probably belongs to someone,” Julianna pointed out with a subtle hint of sadness. “She’s very well-behaved and so sweet.”

Jules waited for Owen to hand the dog off to her. “Oh! I think there is an extra dog bed in the guest bedroom. Would you check for me?”

She was vaguely aware of someone saying her name.

“Julianna!”

It pulled her out of her thoughts. She lifted her head off her hand, and straightened her posture quickly like a student who had been caught dozing in class. “What?” Her reply was quick and automatic, something about it making her sound even more guilty. Ignoring that fact that she hadn’t been doing anything wrong. Adults were allowed to daydream in their empty shops.

It was no longer empty. Julianna’s twin brother, Elliot, was standing in front of her. He had a short crop of black curls and bright green eyes and for the most part that is where their resemblance ended. "Did you not hear me come in?” He jerked his thumb over his shoulder to indicate the bells hanging over the shop entrance.

“Not at all actually.”

“What were you thinking about?”

The shopkeeper was silent for a few moments. “Uh, nothing,” she said in an obvious attempt at a lie. She moved away from the register and around the counter. She crossed the room and began unloading a box of candles she had abandoned earlier onto a little display by the window that caught the light in a cute way.

Elliot turned to watch her but didn’t move. Now, he was the one who leaned onto the counter. “Uh huh…” he drawled slowly (and somehow, sarcastically) in a clear indication that he didn’t believe her.

For a few moments the only sound was a dull thunk of candle holders being placed on wooden shelves. Julianna made no attempt to admit that she had been daydreaming about one of her customers. A handsome witch that came into her shop every week to buy reagents and ingredients. He always had his three sons with him.

“Slow day, today,” Eli commented.

She looked around the shop. It had a pleasantly rustic aesthetic. An old building with scuffed paint and hardwood floors. Fresh herbs straight from her garden hung from the ceiling and dried flowers lined shelves in little jars. She had honey and beeswax from local beekeepers. Raw gemstones from nearby mountain ranges glittered in the sunlight. It was charming, but it was empty.

“Yeah,” she agreed, lamely. Once finished with the task she broke down the cardboard box and folded it neatly for the trash. She handed it off to Elliot, expecting him to discard it on his way out.

He accepted it but only dropped it to the floor, propped up against his leg. “Where are the kids?”

The shop was open and airy, but it wasn't like it had AC. It was a rather hot day for mid-spring and she could feel a sheen a light sheen of sweat on her face and her back. She pretended it made her look young and glowing and not gross. Julianna pushed her thick black curls on top of her head and secured them in a messy bun with an elastic around her wrist.
There were three of the slim black bands lining her arm. She had a habit of breaking them. “What kids?” She didn’t look at him.

“Those triplets,” he replied, watching her with a smug sort of know-it-all look. “Aren’t they always here in the afternoon.”

“I don’t know about ‘always’,” she snapped. “They come in with their father, occasionally.” It was an understatement, not a lie. The man in question and his children did come in rather often. Mostly weekly, but increasingly in that past week or so. She’d seen him twice already and it was only Thursday. When she looked at Elliot he was grinning at her.

“Do you have a crush on a witch,” he teased.

“Of course not,” she huffed. Not because there was anything wrong with witches. Half of her clientele was magical in some regard. It was because she didn’t want to admit she had a crush at all. Even though she was bright red in her cheeks over the tall, blond and handsome man that always wore three piece suits and sunglasses and only smiled at her in almost imperceptible ways and mostly to tease her.

“I’m pretty sure he’s married anyway.”

“Does he have a ring?”

“I don’t pay attention to that stuff.” He did not wear a ring but Julianna was certain that a man like that had been snatched up already. She wouldn’t entertain Elliot’s prodding.

The twins continued to talk and bicker while Elliot shirked his duties at their family wood shop while chatting with a few customers who did trickle in as time passed.

Tahl and Jorah were not welcome in the greasy, edge of the neighborhood diner where they found themselves lingering. The fact that they had ordered only water was only the first of their sins. They fell in the category of “Youths”, probably too old for high school but young enough that they really should have somewhere to be in the middle of the afternoon. They were ragged, pale, and looked like they had recently jumped in a laske (because they had). Most suspiciously, they both had respirator-like masks covering half their faces. Tahl imagined they must seem like gang members. Or drug addicts. Possibly both.

She had to keep pulling her mask away a little to get her straw to her mouth. Jorah has clearly given up on his. He was stretch out to his full (considerable) length, dangling his legs off the edge of the booth so he could lean back and close his eyes. He looked dried out and exhausted already. Tahl would have bet his gills were red under his mask. Things were getting to be harder than she thought they would be.

She dipped a finger in her glass and flicked a droplet of water at him. He just grunted. Not getting the reaction she wanted, she sighed and settled her head in her hands. After a minute of concentration a tiny whirlpool formed in the centre of her glass, the straw spinning wildly.

~Stop That.~ Said her brother’s voice in her head. He still hadn’t moved. ~Someone’s going to notice.~

~We’re already pretty noticeable,~ she retorted, also through the link they shared. There was no point arguing with him aloud.

Jorah shifted in a way that might be taken for a shrug. ~Everything else can be explained. You’re going to get us caught~

Tahl huffed audibly, but let her drink settle again. Instead, she changed tactics.

~I want a hamburger~

~We have to save money.~

~We could split it?~

Jorah finally opened his eyes to give her a quelling look, but she could tell he was smiling behind his mask. Unfortunately, he noticed how many looks they were getting and started to stand.

Tahl mock scowled at him for looming. Most average sized people were taller than her. Jorah towered over her. If he’d been built less like a refrigerator they would look a lot more alike, gender aside. They had the same black hair, green tinged pallor, and sharp features. It was probably for the best that he wasn't shorter. The sameness creeped people out already.

Sighing again, she took her brother’s hand and let him drag her out of the restaurant. As the door swung shut behind them, a sink on the kitchen overflowed.
