@"tisper" and I have been brainstorming Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra (as to not be confused with blue aliens) OCs for about a week now. I've created this thread to archive and share our ideas. As of now, it's more of an open forum for discussion and brainstorming, than it is open RP. We haven't decided how we want to proceed with carrying out the story as of yet. All of this information if transcribed for text messages so there might be repeated or vague info.

Setting:

90 years after the end of LoK. The Four Nations, the Republic, and the Spirit World exist in relative harmony. At present, the Avatar is nothing more than a political figurehead. A celebrity with no real power in society. It is a common consensus that the Avatar is no longer needed, until a really old, malevolent spirit awakens and starts sucking people and other spirits dry, because it loves the way emotions feel after being locked away for so long.

Most people tolerated the spirit world, seeing it as a minor inconvenience sometimes.

Solution: Close the portal, stop the spirit, or both.

Characters:

Avatar Shiiru: Hates the attention of being the Avatar. Excellent Earthbender (yes metalbending, kinda lavabending, no other specialties). Decent with Fire and Water (since there was no need for an avatar her training has been lax). Miserable with air. Can move through the spirit would easily. Think she will never be good enough even if the world needs her, but no one does so what's the point.

Quizza: Shiiru's non-bender twin. Jealous of Shiiru, because she would give anything to have 'cool weirdo powers'. Insufferable smart-ass, that does not stop talking. Mostly ignores Shiiru's complaints about being the avatar because of her jealousy. Feels like there is nothing special about her; does a lot of things to seek attention. Skilled fighter, hand to hand combat and chi-blocking. Shiiru's self pro-claimed bodyguard. Older by four minutes. Shorter than everyone.

Shiiru was discovered to be that avatar when she was around 4/5 when she and Quizza were playing and got into an argument, and when Quizza told their parents (who already knew she was an earthbender) could also waterbend in a tattle, her parents reported it. The White Lotus took Shiiru away to begin her avatar training (which was very basic) and to protect her from the Red Lotus, just in case. She was allowed to visit her family for short times, but never stay with them. So Quizza and Shiiru grew up on separate end of Omashu until they turned 18, and Shiiru was moved to the new Ba Sing Sae Republic. Quizza completed her chi training and worked her way up so that maybe she could work with her sister in BSS and ended up being right at her side as a sort of guard and public appearance person (almost like a publicist)

Shiiru and Quizza grew up in fairly crowded Omashu, so Shiiru does not have an animal companion. There just wasn't enough space. The twins have no idea how to fly bison, or ride ostrich horses because no one taught them.

The Twins mostly get along despite their differences. Quizza blames herself for Shiiru missing out on a normal childhood. When they are first reunited they get in each other's way and trip over one another but eventually they have to learn to fight together and become more in sync.

Bentu: Disciple of Vaatu. Super Salty about Vaatu being imprisoned within the avatar, and wants to carry out the chaos spirit's will. Sucks happiness and love to make hate and chaos grow stronger. Bentu was once human and was orphaned as a child, after a flood destroyed much of his village. He grew up as an urchin, experiencing mostly negative reactions from everyone. As he got older and got a job, he fell in love with a woman, and experienced positive emotions for like the first time in his life. Eventually he became addicted to that feeling of happiness and was constantly trying to get validation, and love from the woman who eventually wanted to leave him. Unable to take it, he loved her away and eventually killed her because he couldn't stand the thought of her leaving. He was thrown in prison and left to die. Raw emotion turned him into a spirit and he had no idea how to control himself and hated that no one could see him. Eventually, he became so attention started that he sucked all the emotion from the land (spirits and humans) and pretty much killed everything around him. So the avatar of the time period locked him away, because he could not be controlled.

Unnamed Waterbender: Possible male, because we thought it would be cool.

Unnamed Airbender: The Air Nation is still busy trying to rebuild, and has been keeping to themselves. Finding an Airbending teacher for Quizza has proven difficult.
Practicality is in her nature. Everyone is a little afraid of her. Her bending style seemed more advanced because her movements are so precise. Deadly calm and in-order.

Welcome to the forum! Alonimi is a forum roleplaying community that has much of its roots in the communities of Gaia Online and Tentacl, but we welcome roleplayers from all corners of the internet. Nonetheless, much of our idosyncracies grow out of those roots, and so it can be a little intimidating to get started if you're new!

First off: introduce yourself! Then, post in the chat thread! An introduction doesn't do us much good if you don't want to talk to us. As a rule, we are a shy bunch; we don't want to impose by messaging you out of the blue. In the chat thread, you can post anything from just the word 'hello' to a GIF you particularly like. The chat thread is how we get to know you, and it's a lot easier to get people to play with you if they know where you're coming from as a player!

Profiles and character images are not required. While many players use them, they are usually more for our own benefit. The profiles are there so we don't lose track of things like relative character heights, and the pictures are there to help better project the kind of vibe we want our characters to give off. If you don't have profiles or pictures, that is completely fine. Seriously: don't worry about it.

When you're first getting started, if you don't have a friend already posting, your best bet is going to be posting in one of the walk-ins. In general, any thread that is not specifically tagged as 'closed' or '1x1' is open to new RPers. However, some threads are more friendly to new posters than others. A directory of such threads can be found below, if you'd just like to jump right in.

Something else that can help in getting started is making a thread in The Repository. A lot of us like to write short stories about our characters, and collect them in threads to keep things organized. Those stories can help other players understand what our writing styles are like, as well as how our characters actually play. After all, a character profile can sometimes give a very different impression of a character than the reality of how they behave.

Different players have different styles, both in terms of the kinds of threads they enjoy and the manner in which they write. Some players prefer to have very long and introspective posts; others prefer short and quick and heavy on the action. There's no right or wrong way to post! But in general players tend to gravitate towards those with a similar style to their own, and it's considered polite to stick to threads consistent to your style. For instance, if your posts tend to be extremely long, you might want to avoid posting a wall of text in a hypercasual thread.

If you're still not sure where to start: seriously, post in the chat thread! Chatting with us is the best way to figure out where your character might fit.

For character images that float to the left or right and automatically resize themselves for desktop or mobile:

Code:

[avatar=left]URL[/avatar]
[avatar=right]URL[/avatar]

Example:

For images with a maximum width of 160px and a buffer between them (primarily used for moodboards):

Code:

[mb]URL[/mb]

Example:

Embedding

For all embeds, make sure the URL you are using begins with https! http embeds will not work, and will produce a blank frame.

To insert a soundcloud player:

Code:

[soundcloud]URL[/soundcloud]

Example:

To insert an 8tracks player, use the Wordpress Shortcode under the 8tracks embedding options! The URL will automatically be converted from http to https. Do not edit the shortcode! The code itself will look something like this:

Code:

[8tracks width="300" height="250" playops="" url="URL"]

Example:

When players are done with a thread - regardless of whether it's complete - moving it to the archives is a good way to keep it from remaining mixed in with the live threads.

For the purposes of locking or archiving threads, or both, I need to hear from all involved players in order to confirm that everyone is okay with the end of the thread. Posting a request in General Chat is probably fine, but to be absolutely sure I receive the request, it can be PMed to me. Clarify whether the thread is complete or incomplete for the purposes of archiving. Not all locked threads need to be moved to the archive, but all archived threads will be locked, so be sure that it looks the way you want it in terms of formatting, headers, etc.

Archiving threads is not obligatory, but clearly telegraphs to other players how many of your threads are actually active, and how busy you really are. Threads archived as complete may also be more friendly to those wanting to read 'backstory' threads, or who want an idea of how your threads tend to play out.

Locking threads is also not obligatory, but may be useful for things like Seeking threads where no new partners are needed.

As an admin I also have the ability to move individual posts between threads, if so desired. However, I cannot rearrange the order of posts; posts will still be ordered by their original post time.
</li><li>Much like Valesport, I like it to be slightly self-contained just to avoid any wide-reaching implications. Those kinds of things (far-reaching governmental and world politics changes etc) make for interesting novels but hella heavy lore for a roleplay. I prefer to keep lore light in general just to make things easier for newbs to jump in? So outside Las Ballenas the craziness of it is probably widely considered to be exaggerated.
</li><li>"TV rules" might be a better explanation for it, with Valesport analogous to Supernatural and Las Ballenas analogous to Eureka. Did anyone else watch Eureka? Whatever idc you get what I mean here probably</li><li>'Somebody Else's Problem Field' is another good way to think about the valley, although I haven't decided if there is actual fuckery in place or just human nature
</li><li>Any good comic has way more villains than heroes so that's probably true here as well</li><li>I have seriously not put very much thought into this at all aside from "it's a lot like my hometown but some of those assholes have superstrength"

I know, I've been letting this sit on the lazy sideburner of theeeere. XD Sounds like we're getting a nifty steampunk city though *UBERFLAILING* so I thought it'd be useful to get things sorted on the timeline for the Bazaar and for the journeys of the current ships, so we can figure out where people are, what they're doing, and what they've already done.

Steam & Sugar left off on Day 1, dinnertime.

Pixie Status: Scoping out ships and financiers.
Heading: Plan to take down their enemies and rescue other former Pixies.

Vanguard Status: In dock, not providing meals, crew beginning to trickle back aboard for system preps. (Several of them drunk, which is always good.) Captain likely already bedding down with some entertainment for the evening.
Heading: Voyage between non-politically aggressive waypoints as well as volatile destinations within each of the contested areas.

Bazaar Status: Finnigan's in high spirits and getting rowdy for late-night shenanigans.
Heading: Walk-ins for meandering about a neutral steampunk mesa and populating other ships.

Sooooo...Poll: Where to roll forward to? Feel free to drop suggestions in here too--I just threw up some options but am open to more.

There's also the option to dump the Vanguard folks into the closed city. *shrugs*

So, in order to facilitate the creation of all kinds of fun big plots, I'm making this thread so we can better build up Valesport as a place with a history and a map and so on.

What I have so far, which is not necessarily set in stone:

Valesport is based on Boston, but with a massive river separating it into two halves. Architecture involves a lot of brownstones where it doesn't involve skyscrapers.

It is one of the oldest cities in the United States, so there's a lot of old things lurking around.

The guy currently calling himself Jean and running Tsundoku was one of the first people to make a home in Valesport, to the extent that the rest of that residential district ended up building itself around his house (which sort of ruined his view but he's had some time to get over it).

Like attracts like, and in this case weird magical biz attracts more of the same; Jean and the ones who followed established the precedent of the mundane authorities allowing the supernatural communities to basically police themselves.

One of the oldest covens in the city made the mistake early on of trying to use Jean as a magical reagent. It did not end well for anyone. There is now a rule that witches stay out of Old Town if they can help it, and other gangs/organizations tend to follow suit. Old Town thus constitutes neutral territory, not that this stops whippersnappers from trying to test it once in a while.

Each new wave of immigrants tends to bring with it something strange from their own country, including variants of vampires or fae previously unknown. New gangs also crop up, but the oldest will likely always be the strongest. I'm thinking the newest are Vietnamese, not for any particular sociocultural reason it just gives our characters a reason to eat a lot of pho and I want to live vicariously through them

Let's just say it's basically Supernatural rules in that it is totally reasonable for a mundane normal person to remain oblivious to all the werewolves and vampires and whatever else, but it is also totally reasonable for them to have figured out what's what

So: thoughts? Ideas? Better ideas than mine? Things you would like to more specifically work in? I am also willing to add a list of gangs to the setting notes, with links to any writeups that anyone may want to do.

Love the idea, Dani. Then again, you keep coming up with good ones. Now, to introduce my character, since the way I wrote her first post didn't really give a way to properly introduce her. Note: when looking at her, remember that you're looking at a superhero, and therefore she operates with superhero physics, not real-world physics. In the real world, her very existence would be impossible, let alone the existence of her partner, Andrei.

Name: Tamara (Tammy) Hoag
Hero ID: Blueshift Girl
Home: 423 H Spooner Way, Laputa Tower A
Age: 21
Place of Birth: Antler, North Dakota
Weight: 160#

Appearance: Tammy has wavy red hair that hangs to her calves when loose. She normally wears it tied back at the nape of her neck, in a simple ponytail. She has the face of a supermodel, but her figure is that of a gymnast who has just entered puberty. The dichotomy has allowed her to get the drop on her fair share of bad guys, despite her unrelenting frustration at her lack of physical development. Her usual style of dress is jeans, hiking boots, and a flannel shirt worn loose over a waffle-knit henley. And, of course, she wears Andrei.

Powers: Tammy is a metahuman, with the power to control gravity. This gives her the ability to fly, to generate shear fields that not only stop attacks, but tear the attacker apart on contact, generate graviton effects that range from simple energy blasts to artificial singularities, and to resist the effects of other sources of gravitons. Oddly enough, she is able to generate a form of gravitational anomaly that has the relative intelligence of a guinea pig and follows her around like a puppy. No one has been able to explain it, and she doesn't particularly care, since the anomaly simply poofs out of existence after a while, or if it takes too much damage.
=============

Name: Andrei Sakharov (reincarnation confirmed)

Appearance: Sparkling black wristband, which can generate a holographic watch face as needed.

Abilities: As a MacManus computer, Andrei is a neural network computer with approximately twenty-three billion primary nodes, and an additional eighty-six billion secondary nodes. His unconscious functions include basic Ravenfield management and input analysis, while his conscious functions include protection of his partner and communication - both with his partner and with the rest of the MacManus network. The complexity of the MacManus computer design is equivalent to that of a human brain, and therefore means that is is possible for a soul to choose to incarnate into a MacManus, rather than a biological brain. On his homeworld, thousands of souls have chosen to do exactly that. Andrei is one of those souls. He retains his fascination with physics, and given that his partner manipulated gravitons, he has plenty of opportunity to study the effects of graviton flux on the world around him.

Andrei is able to fit into the form of a wristwatch because the plastic he is made of is MacManusite, a 27-dimensional plastic that intersects with three-dimensional space in much smaller slices than the full object appears, much like a sphere can intersect with a sheet of paper as anything from a circle of its full circumference to a dot where only a single point appears. Andrei's armor form is another mode of intersection with the three-dimensional world, which gives him enough points of commonality with the world that he can "extrude" weapons, such as his particle beam blasters, shoulder cannons, or eye lasers. Given Tammy's powers, there is rarely a need for him to manifest his armor, unless the intent is to intimidate without demonstrating Tammy's powers.

Andrei's Ravenfield is an energy field, much like a Langston Field, which can be tuned to absorb any form of energy, from kinetic to bosons. Normally, it's tuned to only absorb kinetic or electromagnetic energy above the threshold at which the person the field protects would be injured, and is routinely used to absorb and direct gravitons to allow the protected wearer to fly, but it has been tuned, in some limited circumstances, for use as an offensive weapon. The usual method of offensive use is to tune it to absorb electromagnetic force, although there have been instances where it was tuned to absorb either weak or strong forces. Those instances have only ever happened in areas where the wearer and his MacManus agreed there were no innocents around to be harmed by the resulting explosion. In fact, for most wearers, gravitons are the only boson they're allowed to know it's capable of absorbing.

So, I've transferred the OP for Tsundoku, and I'm theoretically ready to post whenever. However, I'm not sure if we should just pick up right where we left off on Tentacl (almost closing time, Elijah meeting Rhys, just met Rylan, etc) or if we should skip to a few days later. I say a few days because that gives us first and foremost room for any one-on-ones we might want to take place between visits to the bookstore (like Den going home with Likereal), and because it lets us move into a sort of familiarity with characters who've been introduced to each other. For instance: it's been a few days and now Elijah and Rhys understand each other better, it's been a few days and now Elijah is all caught up on what Jean has been doing the last few centuries, etc. It also makes for a cleaner start to the new thread, since we can re-introduce our characters in the new format.
