He kept mentioning how awful her dog was and she fake pouted at him. She was trying to forget that her puppy was a terror and a cross-country move wasn't helping anything. "Maybe we should have gotten you a screen protector," she joked as she she handed his phone back. Boldy leaving her newly added contact information up on the display.
"There are plenty of pets for busy investigative journalists," she teased. The waitress returned with their beers and some seasonal side dishes as appetizers. She took a long drink to avoid having to talk about her dog's behavior anymore. Barker was a work in progress.
They both were.
And they'd get there. Eventually.
"Like fish," she chimed. She picked up her chopsticks and picked up a spicy bit of cucumber to pop into her mouth.
Julianna chewed slowly as he asked about her new residency in his quaint little town. For a moment she looked like she might pretend she didn't hear him. Snacking on more pickled vegetables. "Change of scenery," she said, finally. Which was only sort of a lie and she wasn't ready to admit that they would be working together.
