Owen was finally able to whip the car out of his parents’ drive and get on with taking his new demon home. He tried not to think about that. About how he was responsible for a potentially murderous demon. Well, actually murderous if he didn’t do this “contract” thing with her.
“Hm? What?” He was lost in his thoughts and she was asking him questions. His mind was able to replay the words she had asked without her needing to repeat herself. “Oh yeah. They’re like the leading cause of death.” He waved his hand in a circle and shrugged before it fell with a thump back onto the gear. “But it’s fine. That’s what the seatbelt is for.”
Owen kept driving for a bit before he frowned and glanced over at her. “What? Are you actually nervous?” A smirk appeared on his face as he maneuvered the car in front of another so that he could be the first at the red light. Maybe it was mean, but he took off like a rocket when the light changed to green. His car surged forward easily ahead of the others and the engine made a sound like it was ripping the fabric of reality apart as did.
After he pushed the car much faster than he had any right to given the speed limit, Owen let it coast back to a normal speed. He looked over at his demon passenger and smirked before patting her knee. “Nothing to be afraid of.” He said before making a turn into a residential area. He passed through a gate marked with the name of his private community Hidden Hills.
Hidden indeed, the houses were separated from one another and shrouded in enough tree cover that neighbors wouldn’t see neighbors if they didn’t want to. After navigating a few turns in his neighborhood, Owen pulled into the drive of his home and killed the engine.
“Welp, here we are.” He said flatly before getting out. He ducked back inside, and pointed to her box stashed in her floorboard area. “Don’t forget your box.” He left her to figure out how to unbuckle herself and get out of the car. As far as he was concerned, she was going to have to sink or swim. He couldn’t be expected to babysit her or hold her hand through the modern world.
Owen unlocked his front door and crossed through the foyer, living room, and straight into the kitchen where he would begin fixing himself something to drink to calm his nerves. Nervousness, uncertainty, so many questions were probably the reasons he was being so short with her. Somehow he was getting the sense that the moment he decided to fiddle with that box his whole life had changed and he had yet to see just what those changes would look like.
