Julianna looked back up at him when he turned his head and lowered his sunglasses. She held his gaze, emboldened by her own sunglasses which held firm upon her nose. He definitely knew her face wasn’t usually the color it currently was.
She couldn’t confirm whether he was flirting with her, or just flirting in general. It was typically just the two of them on their outings, so she didn’t have much to compare their interactions to. He was nice and smiled at all the ladies that giggled over him, but that was hardly enough for a conclusive answer. “Well, if you’re going to be there how could I possibly stay away?” She continued to be oblivious to his genuine attention, despite how obvious he was being. She struggled with wrapping her mind around the idea that she wasn’t simply an obstacle course he had to traverse for the Covenant’s benefit.
Ears stood at attention and she made a face; corners of her mouth pulled to the side accompanied by a perfect half-roll of her green eyes. “They’re the embarrassment,” she explained without actually explaining anything. Her brother’s themselves were not particularly embarrassing, both of them were accomplished in their respective realms. They were also very accomplished at embarrassing her. They knew every dumb secret she’d ever had and exactly how to push all of her buttons. “You don’t want to meet them, they’re…” she paused and squinted her eyes, searching for an accurate word. “Boring.” The vowels were drawn out in what was clearly an acceptance of her lackluster conclusion.
They weren’t but he didn’t need to know that.
Julianna moseyed around the dock as he spoke to the dock assistant. Barefoot steps silent on the treated wood. With fingers laced behind her back the exaggerated sashay of her hips swirled skirts around her feet. Peering over the edge and into the water she watched a small fish dart away from her shadow, before she returned to Owen’s side, just as he addressed her. She nodded eagerly at his questioning.
Work-worn hands on the skin left bare by the cut of her dress; her own hands gripped his shoulders as he plucked her from the dock. Her laughter rang out as he swung her around and set her gently down aboard the Lanoria. She didn’t let go until he did, hands sliding down his chest as he rotated away from her to address the deckhand.
Intrigued, she lifted the lid and peeked into the basket she was now in charge of. Her mouth rounded into a perfect ‘o’ of surprise as she viewed it’s contents. “This is amazing.” Her tail was swaying contentedly behind her head. Ear flickered playfully as she lifted one shoulder to brush against her cheek. She plucked a candied almond from the trove of goodies and popped it in her mouth before setting the basket down. The sweet flavors coated her tongue as she toyed with the almond between her teeth. She lingered near him as he steered them away from the docks.
They cruised gently for an hour, enjoying the snacks and the rum and wine. Night had fallen in its entirety and they were far enough away from the island that there were no lingering lights to muddle the sight of the stars.
Julianna was admittedly a bit tipsy at this point. She laid flat next to Owen on the deck of the Lanoria, nibbling on pieces of skewered fruit and pointing out the different constellations to him. “Ursa Major appears in the Northern Hemisphere,” she explained. She leaned against him somewhat to point to a cluster of stars to their left. “The Lynxes have a similar asterism known as The Plough, which is part of the larger constellation Servani.” Closing one eye she attempted to hone in on the two stars she had accentuated in her sand drawing earlier that day. “Polaris, is the common pole star in the Northern Hemisphere, but if you use the pointer stars at the end of The Plough, you find... Rigel,” he finger moved slightly upwards to finally linger on the pole star in question. Her hand dropped to pull another strawberry from the stick and pop it in her mouth.
