“You sending another picture?”
Katanya allowed the voice of the speaker to pull her out of her thoughts and she looked down at her watch. Another hour had indeed passed, she hadn’t really been paying attention. Too busy overthinking and backtracking to give it any care. Her boots slid off the desk and met the floor audibly and she leaned forward to pull the phone from her back pocket. She pushed it towards the lackey wordlessly, under the impression that he would take care of it.
It was almost time for her to meet Agent Hart at the rendezvous point, regardless.
As she was double-checking her gear and weaponry in the makeshift armory of their mountainous hideout the sound of screaming drew her attention. Dropping whatever she had been holding Katanya raced towards the noise. She knew where it was coming from. Anita’s holding cell; she was the only capable of producing such a heart-wrenching sound.
The soldier she had sent to do the job was leaving the room as Katanya skidded to a halt in front of it. “What happened?” she asked. She was livid, it showed on her face. “What did you do.”
“Just a couple of fingers,” he replied as if that explained everything, and given the situation it really did. “He wanted a video,” the man continued, pointing to the phone. “Thought I’d make it interesting.”
Katanya drew her gun and smashed the butt of it into the man’s face. He stumbled against the door, clutching his face and groaning. Other Russian soldiers under her command had started filing in from other areas of the compound, having heard the screaming.
“What did I say?” Katanya screamed down at him as blood poured from his mouth. When he didn’t answer she screamed louder. “What did I say!”
“Not to hurt the child,” he slurred over blood and his own incompetence. “I just thought-”
Katanya centered her pistol on his forehead and pulled the trigger without a second thought. Blood and gore splattered across the wall behind him before he could even register what she was doing. The shot rang in her ears in the resulting silence. Wiping blood from her face with the sleeve of her sweater she turned to address the crowd.
“None of you are here to think,” she said darkly, waving her gun emphatically at the lot of them. “You are here to do exactly as I say. No more and definitely no less.” Katanya could still hear Anita sobbing on the other side of the door, the sound had been exacerbated by gunfire. “If another one of you even so much looks at that girl, I will kill you.” Holstering her gun she moved towards the crowd and they parted so she didn’t have to push past them.
“Clean up this mess,” she ordered over her shoulder.
Julianna allowed Owen to manipulate her hand, watching the way his thumb fiddled with her rings. As he expected she also sorted through their list of friends and family. It was intentionally short, and none of them stuck out to her either. “You’re right. I have no idea. It was...just a thought.”
Her ears fell as he spoke about moving, she propped her other arm on the table and dropped her forehead onto it. She didn’t need to verbalize that she didn’t like the idea. They had built so much here, and she hated the concept of having to tear that all apart. She looked at him from over her arm when he mentioned security. She didn’t contradict him, even though she wanted too. He had his own ways of dealing with the situation. They would decide what to do when they had their daughter back.
Sitting upright as he took his hand from hers. She looked down at her watch, seamlessly slipping into assistant mode even after all the years. “You have to go soon.” She wished it was as easy as his past missions, but this time there was no briefing, no itinerary. No paperwork, just constant unknowns and fear.
Taking the phone from him, she got up from the table just as the burner started to buzz.
Julianna knocked on Cain’s door gently before pushing it open. As expected him she found him brooding on his bed, looking positively lifeless without the possession of his phone. “Look what I rescued for you,” she said in a mostly sing-song tone as she approached the bed, holding out the phone like it was some sort of prize. She dropped down onto his bed with him, wrapping an arm around his shoulder and pulling him against her, ignorant of any whining or objections. She balanced her chin on top of his head in the space between his ears. “Are you okay?” she asked, gently.
