As Owen told his story featuring the cat mug, what seemed to be a flood of dogs entered the kitchen at once. The dogs that had been left slumbering in Julianna’s office woke to discover their abandonment and had sought out their respective masters. Two long and sleek greyhounds and a diminutive toy poodle clamored around Julianna seat the table, while a pudgy English Bulldog waddled towards Celeste, stubby tail wiggling happily. There was a brief cacophony of excited whines, before the new occupants to the kitchen settled around comfortably in the cozy space.
“You probably were flirting,” Celeste replied with a playful roll of her eyes. She’d been hearing recounts of her parents love story for as long as she could remember. And there was a lot of story to tell given that they had been together for nearly fifty years.
Julianna smiled, entertained by her husband’s mirth, but there was a sadness to it that reflected in green eyes. It was a familiar expression that came upon her when she was hearing a story about herself for the first time. Remember? He asked. But she didn’t; her memory still riddled with holes as a result of her brother’s tampering with her mind. She held her mug in both hands as she took a sip of her coffee, her gaze downturned to the liquid inside.
Celeste abandoned her coffee and her cereal to reach down and pull the snorting bulldog into her lap. The dog turned in her arms and to lick her face affectionately as Celeste giggled.
“Why don’t you go get ready?” Julianna suggested as she stood. The dogs at her feet sat up to watch her move around, gathering Celeste’s dishes to take them to the sink. The female greyhound moved just enough to sniff fondly at Ruger, who still occupied his place at Owen’s side.
Celeste and Princess Horsepower, the bulldog, left the kitchen and disappeared for awhile as she prepared to meet her new guard. Julianna remained in the kitchen with Owen, cleaning up as he finished his coffee. Despite having a housekeeper and the like to help manage the sprawling estate, Jules still enjoyed the little things of a normal domestic life.

I fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) I want no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true) and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you.
