Julianna couldn’t remember the last time she had been trapped in a closet. She also couldn’t remember the last time she had been so close to being caught. She also couldn’t remember the last time she had accepted a whining sob story as grounds to take a job. Apparently, she couldn’t remember a lot of things and when she escaped the situation she should probably take a short vacation to get her shit back together.
“You don’t understand!” The man had shouted this as he paced back in forth in the short space of Julianna’s room. He was wringing his hands over a fancy handkerchief. Fancier than those usually carried by the types of people who bargained for her services. The halfling thief was doing her best to look bored, when she was rather intrigued. The man continued to walk back and forth irritably.
“The amulet has been in my family for generations, and is apparently very powerful. It’s a priceless heirloom!”
Jules snorted a laugh, her ears twitching quickly atop her head. “It sounds to me like the price was sex with an incubus.”
The man paused, looking past her head, eyes had gone glassy and wistful. He sighed a dreamy sigh and Jules turned her head in either direction. Her tail appeared behind her shoulder as she waited for him to snap out of his strange reverie. It must have been quite the demon.
Julianna had taken the job out of a sort of wild curiosity. The amulet had been lost fair and square but she liked stealing things and did not often get the opportunity to travel into Darkside. The client had directed her to the Red Palace, a renovated hotel turned bordello run by a greater demon and filled with succubi and, the rarer, incubi. She had given the man a vague idea of her plan and a lax timeline as to when she would get it done. He didn’t seem entirely pleased with her conditions, which was to be left alone and he would get the item when he got the item, but he left nonetheless with the promise of payment upon delivery.
Aesthetically, it was certainly quite the demon. The description she had be given of the incubus had seemed far-fetched at first. Tall, with light eyes and dark hair and skin the color of umber decorated in paisley designs of white ink. Curling horns with delicate etchings. Large wings with feathers dark as night with the shifting colors of an oil slick. The details had sounded like a fever dream whipped up by a desperate and sex-starved noble, but when she had finally laid her own eyes on the incubus, she found the account to be lacking.
Jules had taken her time. She had done the job as well as any other, and she liked to think she was very good at her job. So when she thought, she had memorized the prostitute’s schedule, and discovered which room as his, that breaking in would have been the easy part of the job. Which it was. She was in the room now, a simple lock pick when the hall was empty.
It had been the schedule part that she had gotten wrong. Usually when the incubus (Eoin, she had been told) was finished with a customer he would disappear down to the bar to find another. Fifteen to thirty minutes he was usually gone, but he’d been quicker this night. Returning in ten. She had barely had time to search the room when voices outside the door caught her attention.
Now, she was huddled in a closet, hunkered down on the floor and hidden in the shadows. Ears pressed flat to her head, she silently twisted the leather of her whip in between her hands. It was more awkward than worrisome, and even awkward was putting it lightly. Her ears burned where they were pinned backwards, along with her face which was flushed.
Trapped in a closet while a prostitute serviced a client was not exactly her idea of a job well done.

I fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) I want no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true) and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you.
