“Rob” she repeated, finding some room to sound wrongfully indignant. She wanted to tilt her head, once more, to see if he would follow but she resisted. “As I thought, mistaken. I was simply coming by for a visit.” Her lips curled in an imitation of a sweet smile that did not reach her eyes. Not quite green, and not quite blue, the eyes in question remained locked on him, as if she were the hunter and not the one in the trap.
Fisel shrugged the best she could. “I will have to let the Duchess know that one of her handmaidens is terrible with directions.”
She wondered if he was birdlike to compensate for the mask, or if the mask was to compensate for being birdlike.
It was possible Fisel would have fought harder, or even gotten a bit vocal had she not been blatantly aware of the uselessness of it all. One did not become a pilferer of magical objects without any training, without doing a little studying. Sometimes, you got screwed and there were some spells that you couldn’t get out of. This was one of those spells, but that did not mean she was not subtly working her wrists in opposite directions to test the hold of her bindings.
She blinked against the renewed lighting, more out of habit than true inconvenience, even if her vision was better suited for the dark.
Somehow, he was more imposing in the light, when it was no longer a trick of darkness and shadows that made him tall. He would loom easily over her even if she was not pinned to the ground. When he turned his back to examine the wardrobe she dropped her forehead to her hands, silently beating some sense into herself for being so reckless.
She didn’t watch as he inspected the bureau, still trying to pretend she had no interest in it.
When he turned back, she dropped her hands, back to playing the role of innocent captive, even if he was not falling for it. Hell, she wasn’t even falling for it to be honest, but she shrugged again at his exclamation, like she was the last person in the world that knew anything about willow ash. Let alone have a pouch full of it.
“I’m certain I don’t know what you mean,” the thief insisted. “So, if you could just let me go, we can put the whole misunderstanding behind us.” She held up her hands expectantly.
