At first glance, most people would be quick to assume that Fisel was not an elf. Honestly, those who bothered to give her a second glance, would still think that she wasn’t an elf, but that was likely due to their never having seen a mountain elf before. Forest elves were the most common. Tall and thin, and pale like silver birch trees and just as haughty, if it were at all possible for a tree to be smug (which it was). Ocean elves were even rarer than mountain elves, and that was probably why it was assumed that ‘ocean elf’ was a derogatory euphemism for a mermaid.
Ignorance really was boundless.
Fisel was short, and dark. Curved in places that the forest-kin were not, with slit pupils for seeing in the hollowed out caverns they typically called home. It was said that their short stature and dusky complexion was the result of an ancestral union with dwarves. It was spoken of with an air of distaste, but the Redridge Mountain elves were a proud people from a beautiful summit that they would quickly defend at the slightest provocation.
Since she had nothing better to do than list the differences between elven clans, as if practicing a lecture, she would never present, it was worth mentioning that forest elves were boring. Fisel popped blueberry into her mouth, sighing quietly, as she adjusted her position, the tree branch she was straddling was not the most comfortable thing.
Surprise, surprise.
It was common knowledge that dwarves liked shining things, gold, jewels and what have you. Forest elves like old things, spending their lives searching for artifacts and relics of forgotten ages. As for mountain elves, they liked magic things. Enchanted whatevers and spellbound baubles. It didn’t matter what it was or what it did, but she did know that she could sense them.
And that she wanted them.
Fisel Roi-Manton had two skills: archery, and taking things that didn’t belong to her. Well, and technically eavesdropping, but that was part of the taking things? Her impressive ability to be not seen and not heard was what led her to the miraculous magical treasure trove that was the Baron of Corvana's sprawling landholding. Another blueberry and a bored glance upwards to the light that was still filtering though the baron's study window. At least, Fisel assumed it was a study given how much time was spent within it.
He could do to spend more time out of it.
He could do to do anything, that was not hole himself up in his estate all day to keep her from stealing all of his semi-precious belongings.
Another blueberry, and her gaze flickered upwards, eyes reflecting the moonlight filtering through the branches of her hideout and her mood lightened immeasurably.
The lights had gone off. Finally. Three days in and only seven hours past sundown, and the lights had finally diminished before Fisel had given up for the night. She immediately pushed herself out of the tree, tucking into a roll and launching herself into a full sprint. Her scouting had led her to believe that there was no security to be had, no one or thing to stop her from scaling the wall and wiggling through the window that had been open and forgotten for two days.
She brushed off her leathers. “Now, if I were a priceless magical tchotchke, where would I be hiding,” she whispered to herself in the darkened room. She closed her eyes, and the presence of the arcane left tingles on her skin, a sly smile curved at the corner of her mouth. “Oh, everywhere I guess.”
