Leon had more than enough time to catch his breath while they were waiting for the results of their performance. That was always nice, not to have to smile and bow while leaving the headspace they get into during a dance. It was also annoying. Waiting meant that their audience wanted them to wait, to stew, to think about everything that had gone wrong, everything they might have noticed, and wondering if they even liked it to begin with. He wasn’t surprised this particular audience wanted to make them wait.
Then there was clapping.
Leon let his mask slip, a smile slipping across his face and away again. He’d almost forgotten about the barkeep. He’d never imagined that he’d be grateful to see the silly thing during this visit. At least someone here knows how to appreciate art.
I get it now, it’s cute-stupid. Like a pet that keeps running into walls.
Hah, of course she’s compare her to a pet. No way in hell we’d be able to get away with that. You aren’t that good yet. He teased gently, fully knowing the line he was treading.
I have no interest in being taken for stupid, no matter what the benefits are for that little idiot.
There it was. Leon couldn’t laugh outright. Hell, he couldn’t even let the laughter show in his eyes, that was too easy to interpret by outsiders. But he sure as hell could sign his silent amusement towards his sister.
That better be laughter over the fact that anyone is foolish enough to take me for stupid.
Ah, he’d hit a sore spot. My dear sister, I’m laughing because you’ve forgotten that’s one of your acts.
One that shouldn’t work as well as it does, frankly. It only works at all because I’m such an incredible actor.
An incredibly modest one, too.
Modesty is only one of my many wonderful traits.
When it pays off.
Of course! Why do anything that doesn’t~?
And that was why it worked as well as it did. Once Grilka’s attention was back on them, it was time to become serious again. His sister would have to go back to em, now, as much as he was loathed to let her slip away. Especially considering that now was when the real negotiations began.
His hands tightened.Sounds like it’s asking if we’ll be party favors for its friends.
Yeah, I got that too. Not looking forward to haggling with the giant snake monster, ugh.
He signaled a nonverbal sigh. She what they needed to do already, but he knew it would help her refocus for him to state it. Pick out one or two things we won’t budge on. We can give up a lot of ground, but you know what boundaries we need to set.
Yeah. Yours first, then mine. I would prefer not to be a party favor. We’ll see how well I can do.
Don’t push yourself too far. He insisted, knowing full well that she would give up too much ground if only to spare him. He loved her for that, but at the same time he hated seeing her put herself into uncomfortable situations. It was especially frustrating because he would have to be the one to pick up the pieces afterwards.
Hopefully I won’t need to.
