Cain, of course, had no idea what was going through the mind of Sadie. None of them would have guessed her true nature. So he proceeded throughout the examination just as he would any of his other canine patients.

The scan turned up nothing and Cain set the tool aside with a shrug. "Not chipped."

He looked back at Sadie as his mother asked for a less invasive visit. It wasn't an uncommon request though he was usually a little bit more irritated when his orders were questioned.

"Sure. She seems like a healthy girl." He acquiesced, "But if you're going to keep her-" his eyes flashed to his father's face to gauge his response to yet another pet, "-eventually, you know..." Cain trailed off knowing his mother got his point. "She's probably had enough stress being lost, finding new people, and seeing the doctor..."

He glanced at his father again, "So, are you... gonna keep her?"

Owen was aware his cue (not that he had the only say). He would never admit it out loud but it was touching the way Julianna had lit up with the prospect of a new dog to love. Even now she was cradling the dog to her chest protectively. Owen wordlessly placed his hand on her shoulder and squeeze massaged it showing his support for whatever decision she would make. And he knew what she would want. And he knew this was about to become a shopping trip.

Jules perked up tremendously when it was revealed that Sadie didn't have a microchip. Her ears stood to high attention and her tail swayed on the little bench. A kittenish trill of excitement sounded off in her throat. While she tried not to seem pleased that the dog truly was a stray, she couldn't help but be excited to keep her. She swept the dog up into her arms and cuddled her. Sadie yipped and wiggled in her arms, loving the attention. "Of course I'm going to keep her," she explained. She didn't miss a beat. Julianna didn't need to look at Owen because his hand on her shoulder was enough reassurance that he was deferring to her judgement.

Not that there had ever been any doubt between the three of them that she would be doing anything else with the dog.

"You go to lunch at one," Julianna said, matter-of-fact. It wasn't a question, because she was familiar enough with her son's schedule at the hospital by now. It was also how Owen knew to make their appointment close to that break. "Let's go to lunch," she suggested. She released Sadie and the dog danced back and forth between the queen and her son for more petting. "We can get sushi." Julianna knew that if Cain had been thinking about turning her down, the mention of sushi would be enough to sway him.

Cain's ears parked at the promise of sushi. Of course he would let his parents buy him his favorite lunch.

"If you're going to keep her, you should schedule another exam with me so we can get bloodwork..." He knew she knew the drill so he left it at that as his parents left the exam room.

He would see them again for lunch.

Owen realized the day was now turning into a doggie shopping trip and lunch with Cain. That's fine, he could adapt.

He spent the rest of the morning following Julianna around as she picked out accessories and supplies for her new dog. He could tell the activities put a strain on her, but her excitement carried her through the day.

When it came finally for lunch, Owen knew Julianna was grateful to sit down and rest after a morning of walking and carrying Sadie around stores.

They sat outside because the patio seating allowed dogs. The sushi restaurant near Cain's work was more fusion than anything. Trendy and non-traditional. It was charming and eclectic and Julianna loved it. She was always so happy to see what new restaurants and shops were popping up on the islands. She loved the mix of cultures across her country. Julianna was facing the direction Cain would be coming to meet them from the animal hospital and she waved when she spotted him coming around the corner.

The table had two chairs on either side and Sadie occupied the chair next to Julianna. Owen didn't look particularly happy about sitting across from her, but she held her hand out over the table for him to hold. This arrangement also forced Cain to sit closer to his father. "Hello, sweetheart," she greeted Cain, again. This time forcing him to lean down so she could place a kiss on his cheek.

Sadie yipped at him from her seat next to Jules. Tail wagging. As if she also expected to be acknowledged.

"How have you been? How's work?" Julianna set to immediately interrogating him about his life. His schedule meant he was so rarely around for her to pester.

Cain arrived last for lunch. Though it was a warm spring day, he hunched his shoulders in his military style canvas jacket he wore over his scrubs. His eyes were hidden behind dark sunglasses.

He dutifully bent to let his mom kiss him on his cheek. "Hey mom," he pulled out his chair, "hey dad." Before he could sit, Sadie tipped at him. "Oh sorry. Hi Sadie." He greeted the dog, patting her on the head before he sat down.

Cain waa looking over the menu as he was showered with questions. "Work is work. I hate most people but the animals are fine...usually..."

He turned the menu over and sighed as he perused the options. "I'm going to a party with Indigo tonight."

From Cain's side, Owen grumbled. "Don't get yourself in trouble. No drugs or drinking and driving."

"I know." Cain sounded put out about the mini lecture.

"Do you?" Owen challenged.

"Oh good, the waiter's here." Cain countered before the waiter greeted the table and asked about their orders.

Sadie hopped down from the chair she had occupied and bounced over to where Cain now sat by his father. No reason to not get some attention from a hot veterinarian while he was around. She stood up on her hind legs and put her paws on his shins. Her nubbed tail wagged back and forth as she yipped softly at him to pick her up.

Julianna looked over the menu while her husband grilled Cain. She sighed internally and wished Owen wouldn't be so hard on him. Owen had never forgiven Cain for the accident that had resulted in her injuries. She feared he never would and it would be a lifetime of strained interactions. She smiled at Cain briefly until he mentioned Indigo and it faded around the corners. "Are you-"

The waiter interrupted so she ordered a Japanese beer and two plates of gyoza as an appetizer. When they'd satisfied the server's request she looked back to Cain. "You're seeing Indigo again? I thought...that you had broken it off with her after that last fight. It was really awful, Cain. I could hear the things she was saying to you all the way in the main house."

Cain was surprised to see Sadie abandon his mother for him. "Oh! Hello." His laugh was breathy and brief as he reached down to scoop the little dog into his lap. "I guess she doesn't hate me." He rubbed the top of her head. "The exam wasn't too bad was it?" He asked the dog as his mother put in the order.

"Oh and a lavender bubble tea with tapioca." Cain added to the order before the server left the table.

Owen had dropped his line of questioning knowing it was going nowhere and instead focused on what he wanted for lunch. He studied the menu as he listened to Julianna take up the mantle of parental concern with their son who had problems making good decisions.

Cain's ears flattened at the reminder of his last fight with Indigo. Idly, he scratched under Sadie's chin and even looked down at her as he tried to figure out what to say. There was something like a bit of embarrassment in the pit of his stomach. Like part of him knew Indigo wasn't right for him but he kept going back because... well, he couldn't say why.

"We just had a disagreement." It was vague enough that it wasn't really a lie but their "disagreement" had been explosive enough that it was a lie.

"Pretty loud disagreement." Owen muttered without looking up from his menu.

"You and mom fight." Cain countered, his ears pointing more towards the back of his head as he became annoyed with the prodding.

"Not like that." Owen glared back at his son offended at the suggestion that he'd ever argued so bitterly with Julianna. He could remember any such argument and if he ever had such an argument with Julianna they would have never been so careless as to let Cain overhear it.

"Why does it always have to be a fight?" Cain asked his voice pitching as close to a whine as a grown man dared. "I'm going to a party with my girlfriend, it's not a big deal."

RE: Unexpected Guest [Closed] - megs - 11-03-2020

Julianna huffed a sigh. In her mind, Indigo was nothing better than a boring golddigger, who had only been interested in Cain's status as a prince. While, that status had not gone away, his reputation had obviously soured after the incident and Indigo was no longer afforded the same privileges she had been a year ago.

The queen wished Indigo would just move on, and find a new social ticket.

"I just don't think she's good for you. I can't stand the idea of someone treating my son that way."Her one good eye flicked between the two men seated with her. A hand lifted to brush the hair away from the elaborate eyepatch that covered the wound of her lost eye. An annoyed habit she had picked up since the injury. She was mostly numb in that area of her face, so it wasn't as if the hair was bothering her. It aggravated her when her husband and son fought. A lingering effect of the accident and Owen's refusal to forgive their son.

Owen had always been hard on Cain. Now, it was only worse. Except now with a less than subtle air of resentment.

"It's fine," she said, but the way she snapped it at him made it clear that it was less than fine. That the matter was only settled for the moment. To prevent further bickering. "I hope you have a good time at your party." Julianna forced a smile. It didn't reach her eye, but she didn't want to argue with him.

"Sadie seems to really like you," she commented. Sipping on the chilled beer that had been brought out to her. She was surprised that her son only ordered one drink. "Maybe you can keep an eye on her sometimes."

Cain was very nearly pouting over his menu. The expression left his face when the gyoza appetizer and his bubble tea arrived at the table.

"Can I also have water?" Cain added his request to the waiter as she placed a carafe of sake in front of Owen.

Cain opened his packet of chopsticks and dug into the gyoza. "I don't get invited out much since..." he trailed off as he pulled his bubble tea towards him. He left the sentence unfinished as he tasted the sweet lavender flavored drink.

Cain put down his chopsticks and let his hand idly run over Sadie from the back of her head down her spine. "I wouldn't mind watching her." He agreed. Cain loved dogs of all kinds. He could always be relied upon to feed and care for his mother's dogs if they ever traveled even though she had staff who would have been more than capable to do so.

Owen remained mostly silent as the conversation went back and forth between mother and son. He noticed the annoyed way Julianna had brushed aside her hair. He knew better than to press anymore buttons than were necessary. Cain would go to the party and he would take his awful girlfriend. The matter was settled.

At least there was gyoza and sake and sushi on the way. Under the table Owen moved his foot next to Julianna's and lifted his toe to brush her ankle. A peace offering for his previous attitude.

"Great." Owen said when cain agreed to watch Sadie sometimes. "You can take her tomorrow night. I'm taking your mother out for dinner."

Cain opened his mouth and then clamped it shut. He didn't have a protest. He just wanted to protest because Owen was taking a sort of tone of voice that rubbed him the wrong way. Of course it would be no problem to watch the new dog then. He had no plans.

"Sure. No problem."

Despite the tension of the previous day's lunch, it was quite a pleasant Friday preceding when the Hart couple intended to go to dinner.

Sadie followed Julianna and the other dogs around as she worked in the garden that barriered the main cottage from the rest of the yard. The queen tended to flowers and herbs and picked perfectly ripe tomatoes that she put into a woven basket for Owen to take inside later. The oversized double doors of the kitchen opened right onto the furnished patio that led into the garden. Owen sipped coffee and read the paper under the covered pergola. There was nothing subtle in the way he would frequently look up from the newspaper to check on Julianna. She worked happily, even if it was a bit hard for her. She fed the dogs fresh picked strawberries and green beans.

There was a large guest house on the back of end of the property. That is where Cain was staying. Sadie learned this by eavesdropping on conversations between the married couple.

Sadie had enjoyed the day, playing the part of rambunctious puppy. Running circles in the grass and playing with Duke and Duchess. The twin borzoi were so fast. Easily outpacing her and gently knocking her over with their long snouts. She lost count of the times that they pushed into her and sent her rolling onto her back as a way to establish dominance. Sadie understood animal mannerisms pretty well. She had been forced to study them before she escaped from the facility that had been keeping her captive. She knew the twins did not mean her any harm.

While she had the borzoi all figured out, Ruger remained a mystery to her. The stoic German shepard was hard to read and was constantly by Owen's side. Even know he was laying on the wooden deck next to Owen's chair. Ears up and alert. Ready to spring to action at a moment's notice, if he needed to.

Sadie had not interacted with Ruger since he'd been scolded for his outburst when she'd first been brought into the house. She wondered if he could sense that something was off about her.

It was around six PM that Owen and Julianna left for dinner. A very nice dinner, Sadie assumed, if the way they were dressed was any indication. Despite their having left, there was still no sign of Cain.

Being home alone seemed the perfect time to shift back into her human form.

Akiko...or maybe she should just keep calling herself Sadie, stretched out her arms with a grown. She felt sore and cramped up from being a dog for so long. She wiggled all her fingers and toes and cracked her neck. Her skin tingled all over as she tried to get used to the feeling of being herself again.

She was particularly blessed that despite being royalty, Owen and Julianna didn't keep staff in the house. Occasionally, they'd have a housekeeper or maintenance person come around, but no one live-in. The less likely she was to be caught as a strange naked woman wandering around their house, the better. Her first order of business was a shower. The cottage (which was not an accurate word for the small castle) had plenty of stocked guest bathrooms for her to choose from.

Stepping under stream of hot water was glorious. Akiko let it pour over her aching muscles. She couldn't remember the last time she'd had a hot shower.
