RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - saronym - 07-24-2017

The feel of her tail brushing along the front of his legs was still on his mind as he tried to get the bartender’s attention. That feeling and the look of her body in that clinging dress. She sidled up next to him and he brought her those last few steps up to the bar by a hand between her shoulder blades.
He smirked at her realization that her friend had betrayed her by inviting her arch nemesis from Dr. Weatherfare’s class.

“Yeah she did. She sent me a Snap of you two and I just couldn’t resist.”

His hand disappeared into his pocket to retrieve his phone. Owen put in his passcode and thumbed Snapchat to open the private string of snaps he and Maeve had. They had been familiar with one another for a while being in the sorority and fraternity community and had a history of sending one another random things. Owen opened the latest message from her to replay the picture she had sent of her and Julianna.

He turned his phone to show her. “See how cute you look? That dress looks amazing on you, by the way.” He complimented her in a more matter-of-fact than ulterior motive kind of way.

The bartender’s attention was finally given to Owen who ordered Hennessy straight up and then indicated to Julianna. “And whatever she wants.” His credit card made a snap onto the bar. He fully intended to open a tab and pay for all of Julianna’s drinks that night.

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - megs - 07-26-2017

Julianna watched the Snap until the timer ran out and the image disappeared. She hadn’t even been aware that Maeve and Owen were friends enough to be connecting with each other over the application. They did look cute, and it was understandable why he was inspired to join them. Only encouraged by the text across the bottom. Maeve had typed: who let her out in this dress???? along with the image.

Her gaze flicked upwards towards Owen when he complimented her. It was then, as if for the first time, she realized that her dress was short and clinging and unlike the outfits she usually put together for class. Not that Owen hadn’t seen her in something similar, their first meeting had been at a frat house party, but she was kind of hoping he’d forgotten about that. “Thank you,” she replied sincerely, ears sweeping across her hair before popping upright again.

“You don’t look too bad yourself,” she replied. One corner of her mouth curling into a teasing smirk. Owen didn’t seem, to her, like the type of person who needed to be told he looked good; either from hearing it too much or just knowing somehow.

Ears twitched again as his card met the bar top. Her tail swayed pleasantly when he looked to her for her order. Just like any college student she wasn’t going to turn down free drinks. “Vodka Cranberry,” she chimed with a polite smile. The expression faded when she turned back to Owen.

“So you have nothing better to do on a Friday night than this?”

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - saronym - 08-01-2017

Julianna wasn’t wrong in her feeling that Owen knew he was attractive. He had a lot of confidence in his appearance, surely. It helped when people complimented him. It helped especially when they were girls he had a crush on. He didn’t quite have enough humility to disguise the victorious smirk.

“Why thank you.”

As she requested, Owen placed the order for her drink. He turned towards her and leaned up against the bar while they waited for the order to be filled.

“What could be better than enjoying drinks with friends?” He asked with obvious teasing in his voice well aware that Julianna found him annoying. “I could be planning my project idea for Dr. Weatherfare’s class. But -” he scoffed, and rolled his eyes as if the idea of timely preparation was remote for him, “I’ll put that off until he assigns partners.”

The drinks were ready and placed before them on the bar. Owen took his and gestured with his hand back towards Maeve still occupying the booth alone. “Shall we?” He tasted his drink which couldn’t be messed up in its pure form. “Is that to your liking?”

They were quickly replaced by the next patrons waiting to place their orders with the bartender. As they walked, Owen nursed at his drink again. “So what you don’t have anything better to do on a Friday night?”

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - megs - 08-01-2017

It was that smirk that gave him away. Julianna couldn’t help but immediately roll her eyes at the sight of it. In that moment she knew that exactly what she’d been thinking was right, and she shouldn’t have even complimented him. It was wasted on his ego. She hated that that pull at the corner of his mouth suited him.

Her flat expression looked bored as he categorized them as friends, but her tail swayed slowly near her feet. Possibly betraying her true feelings on the matter. “You should have started on the project,” she shot back. She crossed her arms and shifted on her feet, one hip jutted outwards and somehow that short dress didn’t move an inch. Though the hem still rode high on her thighs. “You’re going to need all the help you can get, a head start would do you good.” She continued to tease, even as she accepted a drink from him. “I honestly feel kind of bad for whoever your partner is going to be.”

A smirk of her own appeared before she tasted the drink. She nodded her approval, since he sought it and followed him towards the table where Maeve sat. “I am doing the better thing,” she defended. “I’m at a bar with my friend. Shouldn’t you be doing something weird with your Orelia buddies?”

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - saronym - 10-11-2017

The careless lift and fall of his shoulder advertised his thoughts on the imminent project. “Me too, honestly.” He agreed noting her point that he would be a terrible partner. “Be careful, though. You have a - what - one in 30 chance of being my partner?” Grey eyes rolled upwards as he calculated the odds that they would be paired together. Even though he issued a warning, he would have gladly accepted Julianna as a partner. Not only because she was attractive, but because he knew she was at least organized and thorough. The perfect partner.

Owen slid into the booth with his drink, smiling a greeting at Maeve. He shrugged once more at the suggestion that he should be entertaining his Orelia friends. “There’s always something going on. I find this meeting vastly more interesting than the usual frat activities.”

He leaned back into the booth seat and smirked at Julianna. “Why would you care to attend another Orelia event? I’d be delighted to escort you, as my date...anytime.”

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - megs - 11-02-2017

“I think Dr. Weatherfare would know better than to put the two of us together,” Julianna countered with a roll of her eyes as she slid into the booth across from Maeve. Her continuation of their current conversation, meant that the perky blonde didn’t get a chance to interject a greeting. She smiled calmly at the two of them, unbothered by what almost sounded like an argument as she sipped her own drink.

“Anyone can see that we’re not compatible at all. Academically.” Ears twitched, as she heard herself make this small addition to her statement. Academically. Why would she say that when she meant in any context. Green eyes flickered over Owen quickly as she analyzed her own thoughts. Here they were. At a bar. Conversing and being...compatible. There was a sway to her tail that she didn’t notice until now, Julianna forced the appendage to pin to her leg.

Julianna wasn’t surprised when Owen settled himself next to her. She had come to expect things like this from him after their impromptu lunch not-date. She delicately sipped her cocktail with an air of indifference. As if she could not be bothered by him, when she was constantly bothered by him. She crossed her legs under the table, and for the first time the edge of her dress rose higher.

“I heard most of Orelia house went to the football game in Dover,” Maeve chimed in. She had been watching the exchange between Owen and Jules with interest, but now she was tired of being ignored. “The quarterback is in Orelia, right?” Maeve balanced her chin on her hands and batted her eyelashes at the two across from her. The look managed to signify see, I’m helping, to Owen and I’m just being polite, to Julianna.

Ears pinned backwards as Julianna turned her head to look upwards at Owen. He was still so tall even seated next to her in the booth. It bothered her. Her tail tapped and irritated rhythm between them on the seat. “I wouldn’t be caught dead at another Orelia party,” she snapped. Her face turned red as she thought about the first and only frat party she had attended since transferring. She quickly downed the rest of her drink, smoothly. Just as easily as the body she’d taken off of Owen, her first night in Eskra.

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - saronym - 03-14-2018

Owen gave Julianna his best mock pout. He looked as wounded as he could feign after she suggested that they weren’t compatible and that she didn’t want him as a project partner. He filed her little qualification for later use against her. They weren’t compatible academically.

“That’s right, yeah.” Owen nodded agreeably to Maeve who thankfully was playing the part of his kind-of-wing-girl. Though Julianna was less than enthusiastic apparently.

Owen frowned again at his seatmate. “Oh come on you had a great time at our semester opening bash. I know I did.” That last part was a pointed reference to a shot she had taken from between his legs. A fine memory he had of the cute, if a bit too type-A classmate.

Owen pulled his drink towards him and took a sip from it. “So, in what ways do you think we’re compatible? You said not academically, specifically.” He had chosen to wait to bring the point back up after they had a bit of chatting in between just to throw Julianna off. He so liked to see her fumble over her words.

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - megs - 04-04-2018

It wasn’t very long after Owen and Jules had settled and begun conversing, that Maeve stood to leave. The blonde had perked, noticing someone enter the establishment. She raised a hand and waved at someone behind the friends seated across from her. “I’ll catch you two later, yeah?” She said as means of farewell. Julianna’s ears perked to attention. Was Maeve ditching her with Owen?

Julianna opened her mouth to protest, but Maeve was already picking up her half-finished drink and blowing air kisses at her perturbed friend. “Can you believe her!” Jules twisted in the seat, and placed one knee in the seat of the booth to try and see where Maeve was sashaying off too. Her bare thigh brushed against Owen’s arm and the soft material of his shirt.

Losing sight of her crowd and seeing no one that she would be meeting, Jules returned her bottom to the seat with a huff.

“What?” He had caught her off guard with his question and didn’t seem at all bothered that Maeve had left. “Well. What I meant to say is. That.” She paused, turning her head to look up at him. “We have one class together and you’ve made it your goal to oppose me every chance you get. I don’t think we get along.”

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - saronym - 04-15-2018

Owen stared into Maeve’s eyes - understanding passing between them in that look. She was the best wing woman he could have ever asked for. He finger waved at her. “Tootles.” He said clearly unperturbed to be left alone with Julianna.

He watched Jules twist in her seat staring after her friend who’d abandoned her. He felt her leg brush him and his eyes rolled down towards the contact. Her already tiny dress was riding up some from the maneuvering she was doing just to glare at Maeve. Her legs looked like silk and that brush of contact had been enough to tell him they felt like silk too.

Owen decided against commenting on her legs. She was already riled up enough. He merely watched her as she twisted back and plopped down next to him. If she really didn’t want to be alone with him, she could have called it a night right there. But she didn’t.

“We don’t get along? What are you talking about? You’re the most interesting person in that stupid class.” He countered with a combative tone that clashed with the compliment he was giving her. “You debate with such....gusto. It's fun."

He finished off his drink and dropped the cup to the table. “Speaking of fun. Do you want to go somewhere else?” He checked his watch. “This place is dying off.” He looked around. The crowd was thinning. “I want to go somewhere with less lights and more dancing.”

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - megs - 05-17-2018

“That’s not getting along,” she complained. Immediately countering him like she was attempting to start another debate right there in the bar. She didn’t know how to interact with him any other way. He was always pushing against her in class and even outside of it she couldn’t tell when he was being genuine or teasing. “And just because you think I am interesting in the one politically charged class we have together, doesn’t mean you get along with me.” Julianna took another sip of her drink. The one he had purchased for her. “Just because you think debating with me is fun, doesn’t mean you know anything about me.”

“Do I- what?” Her ears twitched and she frowned at him like she hadn’t heard him. She had, because he had just been on the verge of interrupting her to speak, but she was caught off guard by his invitation to leave their current venue. Julianna doubted he had come to the bar to see her, why would he leave with her. “Aren’t you waiting for someone?” One ear fell lopsided. Despite protesting she finished her drink as well, preparing to move on. “Isn’t that why you came alone? Are you meeting a date?”

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - saronym - 06-22-2018

A flippant one-armed shrug advertised that he didn’t care to split hairs over whether getting along and enjoying debating were synonymous or antithetical. “I like the way you think, is all.” That simple line was all the clarification he offered on his position. It was matched with a charming half-smile that could have meant anything.

“What - no! I’m not waiting for a date.” Owen didn’t mean to laugh at her. He shook his head almost in wonder at her. “I don’t think any date would want me waiting around for her with some other beautiful girl.”

Owen finished his drink along with Julianna concluding that he was going to leave the bar one way or another. “Why do you ask?" He feigned a look of innocent confusion that melted into over-dramatized understanding. "Are -- Are you asking to be my date for the evening?"

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - megs - 07-09-2018

Julianna frowned at him when he laughed her at. As if there was some inside joke she just wasn't quite getting. The sound of it wasn't derisive, he almost sounded like he had found something she said endearing; the strange way he gazed down at her certainly wasn't as smarmy as usual. Her frown faded into something quizzical, both ears falling off opposite sides of her head. She was frowning again when he called her beautiful, but now she was blushing too.

Her tail bristled in surprise behind her head, she tried to hide the activity by quickly dropping it to the floor. "I absolutely am not asking to be your date." She huffed at him, wishing now that Maeve had not left her with her handsome rival. He could be charming when he wanted to be, she knew this from experience.

Trying to push her way out of the booth, she nudged her body against his. "Let me out of this booth," she demanded. His form not budging despite her efforts. "Let's go somewhere else before I change my mind."

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - saronym - 07-12-2018

The bar lighting was just bright enough for Owen to notice the pinkish flush that rose up her face. He cocked his head and pursed his lips at her as a clear sign that he noticed this strange behavior.

“Are - are you blushing Miss Haven?” He asked with tease in his voice even as she was trying to move him. He tilted his head as if trying to get a better look at her which put their faces dangerously close together with her pushed up against him. He smirked at her as if he was enjoying the contact.

He was.

She felt soft against his side and her movement closer meant the air around him was suddenly full of her perfume.

When he let himself finally be moved, Owen slid over in the booth and stood up. He offered her his hand to help her up. The other hand he placed flat against his belly making himself the image of the perfect gentleman.

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - megs - 07-21-2018

"Absolutely not." Her voice pitched higher as she lied blatantly. The hue across her face, no doubt, became more noticable. Why did he always have to tease her? She wrinkled her nose, as she frowned and turned her face away from his which was so close to hers. Annoyingly close. Enticingly close. What was it about that smug smirk that looked almost kissable? She continued to indicate with the press of her hips, that she wanted out of the booth.

Eventually, his form gave way, and she was freed. Black hair fanned out over her shoulder as she snapped her head back to look at him. She looked up at him, almost defiantly, and then down at his hand. For a moment, she considered letting the offering hang there in the air between them as she removed herself from the booth unassisted. Julianna decided to play nice with Owen, for some reason. Sliding her hand into his and using it to more easily get up from the seat. She clutched her phone in the other hand, it had a case on it with a secret compartment for her ID, credit card and some cash. It was buzzing in her hand, Maeve had started texting her from her new location. To tease her just like Owen did no doubt.

Accepting his assistance kept her close to him when she finally stood, and she didn't immediately move away. He was so much taller than she was. Her ears stood at attention as she rolled her eyes upwards, gazing at him through a fringe of dark lashes. Of course, she had always known he was tall, and broad, and smelled good. She had been aware of the since her first night on campus.

"Where are going now?" She asked to distract herself from remembering the events of that damn party.

RE: Pride & Pettiness [Closed] - saronym - 08-09-2018

Owen’s hand closed over hers and his arm tensed as he assisted her from the booth. He didn’t immediately let her hand go. He gazed down at her studying the kind of earnest expression she wore. He might have kissed her if he thought he could get away with it. He used her hand to turn her towards the door before releasing it. He placed his hand between her shoulder blades to guide her forward.

“There’s Mint?” Owen gave his favorite night club as the suggestion for where they could head next. “You ever been?”

Owen maneuvered Julianna through the bar and out into the cool fall evening. It was quieter on the street though there were many animated pedestrians that shared the sidewalks as the weekend nightlife picked up. They were in the historic downtown of Lyle. A cobblestone street lined with Victorian style lamp posts with beveled glass that would be considered quaint in almost any other developed country was the norm in Eskra. Though the old fashioned in the conservative country maintained a conservative appearance, modernity crept into the old city which now featured a lively downtown scene frequented primarily by the college crowd.

The crisp autumn air and festive setting further galvanized Owen’s chipper mood. “So what do you in your downtime, Miss Jules?” He asked as they walked along. He gave her some space, keeping his hands stuffed down in his pockets though he walked close enough beside her to brush up against her arm when the pedestrian traffic herded them closer together.
