Getting Started on Alonimi - Tindome - 01-18-2016

Welcome to the forum! Alonimi is a forum roleplaying community that has much of its roots in the communities of Gaia Online and Tentacl, but we welcome roleplayers from all corners of the internet. Nonetheless, much of our idosyncracies grow out of those roots, and so it can be a little intimidating to get started if you're new!

First off: introduce yourself! Then, post in the chat thread! An introduction doesn't do us much good if you don't want to talk to us. As a rule, we are a shy bunch; we don't want to impose by messaging you out of the blue. In the chat thread, you can post anything from just the word 'hello' to a GIF you particularly like. The chat thread is how we get to know you, and it's a lot easier to get people to play with you if they know where you're coming from as a player!

Profiles and character images are not required. While many players use them, they are usually more for our own benefit. The profiles are there so we don't lose track of things like relative character heights, and the pictures are there to help better project the kind of vibe we want our characters to give off. If you don't have profiles or pictures, that is completely fine. Seriously: don't worry about it.

When you're first getting started, if you don't have a friend already posting, your best bet is going to be posting in one of the walk-ins. In general, any thread that is not specifically tagged as 'closed' or '1x1' is open to new RPers. However, some threads are more friendly to new posters than others. A directory of such threads can be found below, if you'd just like to jump right in.

Something else that can help in getting started is making a thread in The Repository. A lot of us like to write short stories about our characters, and collect them in threads to keep things organized. Those stories can help other players understand what our writing styles are like, as well as how our characters actually play. After all, a character profile can sometimes give a very different impression of a character than the reality of how they behave.

Different players have different styles, both in terms of the kinds of threads they enjoy and the manner in which they write. Some players prefer to have very long and introspective posts; others prefer short and quick and heavy on the action. There's no right or wrong way to post! But in general players tend to gravitate towards those with a similar style to their own, and it's considered polite to stick to threads consistent to your style. For instance, if your posts tend to be extremely long, you might want to avoid posting a wall of text in a hypercasual thread.

If you're still not sure where to start: seriously, post in the chat thread! Chatting with us is the best way to figure out where your character might fit. If you don't have a character yet, and just want to explore certain tropes, we can help with that, too!

When in doubt, tell us what's on your mind and we'll see if we can't work something out. We're big on problem-solving.

Open and Walk-in Thread Directory
Newbie Friendly

The Mud Clod
This is the very best place to start if you're used to casual RP or just starting out! This thread is your standard multidimensional hodgepodge, short-form and casual, with plenty of NPCs. No waiting for a bartender character to post; you can puppet that NPC to your heart's content. Fandom characters are welcome in this thread. The OP of this thread has handed its management over to @Tindome

Ballroom Blitz
This is an 'event' style thread, with specific rules! In general, the Otherworld Masquerade has no bearing on 'canon'. That means you can bring characters to this thread with the understanding that they will not remember what has happened within it, so you don't have to worry about things making sense. Be mindful of the thread-specific rules (i.e., be sure your character has jewelry indicating the time limit and a dapper outfit) and you won't have to worry about the impact this thread has on your character's personal storyline. Fandom characters are welcome in this thread, but OCs are preferred. This thread has an OOC thread for plot discussion. The OP of this thread is @Tindome.

The Desert Rose Bordello
Originally a PWP thread, it turned out we love plot too much. This thread is extremely NSFW, but new patron characters are always welcome in this post-apocalyptic setting. Think Mad Max, think Fallout, and you won't be too far off the mark. Playing a whore is a bit trickier, and it's recommended you consult with the other players first if that's what you're after. The OP of this thread is @megs

Farendajo
This cyberpunk bar and grill is alien-heavy sci-fi with a heaping helping of space mafia. If you want to play a human or alien in a science-fiction setting with a plot that strongly interconnects with other characters, Farendajo is a great start. There are a lot of plot hooks here. So many plot hooks. This thread has an OOC thread for plot discussion. The OP of this thread is @Tindome.

Inverted Cathedral
This is a contemporary urban-fantasy walk-in thread, in the more traditional 'open bar' mode. If your experience leans toward vampire bars or supernatural taverns, this twist on the theme will probably be a good fit. This thread has an OOC thread for plot discussion. The OP of this thread is @Blade.

Lavenza Manor
Lavenza Manor is an old-school spooky-style supernatural thread. Classic universal monsters in a castle on a hill, including ghosts and vampires and even aliens. It's easy for characters to jump into this thread for short periods, and longer storylines are also feasible. For longer storylines, discuss it with other players and the OP. The OP of this thread is @Blade.

Titan's Ring
A combination sci-fi fantasy walk-in, if you're interested in playing urban-fantasy style characters while keeping to the canon of Osiris and Terran Allied Space, this walk-in is a great place to go. There are NPCs available to bartend if the bartending character is occupied. The OP of this thread is @Blade.

The One Night Stand
Incredibly walk-in friendly, the One Night Stand is a modern fantasy bar set in downtown Valesport that caters to quick scenes and familiar faces. All races are free to drop by and interact, start a scene, start a riot, sleep with a stranger, get into a barroom brawl, or otherwise misbehave. The ONS is the place for trouble makers of all variety. Original characters are preferred, and content can be NSFW at times. The OP of this thread is @Kat.

Radius
Another walk-in friendly thread, Radius is a sci-fi strip club with biopunk/cyberpunk themes. All races are welcome. The club is located on Osiris Lunar Colony and is within Terran Allied Space. Another NSFW for work thread. The OP of this thread is @Kat.
