[spoiler]The circumstances of Julianna's birth are considered a royal secret. Twins born of two different fathers, one rumored to be the offspring of a demon. Queen Raine made a deal with the devil to save her people and offered her womb as payment. However, the fact that Julianna does indeed play host to a demonic entity was difficult to conceal. Sometimes her eyes turn red, and sometimes she smiles in a way that makes the small hairs at the back of your neck stand up. Sometimes she disappears for days. Most of the time she returns covered in blood. It's been this way since she was a child.
When she was old enough to be queen, her mother surrendered the throne. No longer able to bear the weight of the responsibility. Julianna vowed to do her best by her country, and things were peaceful for a while. The demon made fewer appearances as the young queen entered adulthood. It would be decades before it was even seen again.
Jean-Etienne DeVois was a general in the military when she met him. She didn't know much about him, but he was pretty and he was nice to her and she was pretty sure that was love. Belial killed him when their child was born. A tiny thing that looked like his father and they named Keiavan. Julianna had always been easier for the demon to manipulate when she was hurting.
It isn't known as to why the demon chose to terrorize the Hart lineage. Perhaps, in a past life, one of the proud Vikings had done them some great wrong. Or, even inconvenienced them in some small way.
Belial has been known to be petty.
With one slight the demon became a curse on the Hart line. Slaughtering just enough them to prove a point, leaving enough of them alive to for the lineage to continue, and then they would do it all over again. Something about Reinhold and Ishara Hart changed this vengeful method. After claiming both of their hearts and the lives of three of their children, they left two offspring to live, and have yet to make a reappearance to claim them.
Perhaps, they are just biding their time.
Or perhaps, they didn't expect Julianna to fall in love with the boy, and just maybe that game was more fun
Julianna also had not expected to fall in love with the boy. For the most part she had watched Owen from afar, she would cite that it was for his benefit, but it was inherently selfish. At some point she had been unable to stay away, and for some reason he didn't kill her on sight. Neglecting the one thing he had vowed to do. Falling for one another had been an accident for both of them.
They had two children. Cain who looked so much like his father, and Anita who looked so much like her. Another child would be lost to illness; Ethan would have looked like them both.
Owen's death had left a hole in her heart and her world that would never be filled. She was sad, but she was doing better. Her siblings erased her memories none the less. The Darkwillow siblings had never gotten along with Owen for their own reasons, and they refused to see her suffer in his absence. Julianna would hate them if she knew what they had done.
Without her husband or the memories of his presence Julianna floats around Valesport, looking for anything that will hold her attention. Whisky, or cigarettes or suspicious men in bookstores that look the husband she remembers. Her friends and family have a hard time keeping contact with her. You can't find Julianna when she doesn't want to be found. That aside, she's not the same without Owen, and that makes them a little sad. She no longer has any control of the demon, and Belial tends to do what they want.[/spoiler]

Elliot has wanted to be king for a long as he can remember. Growing up next to Julianna had been less of a competition and more a blatant contest of favor. One that he was constantly losing. Though he was doted on as much as one would expect for a young prince, he was not groomed for leadership in the same manner as his sister.
The Veridian Isles are a matriarchy. Always have been, always will be, unless Elliot gets his way.
His reasons for wanting the crown have never been clear. It could be the power, it could be the recognition. He'd always had an insatiable ego.
Magic came naturally to Elliot. He inherited it from his father. He has spent a majority of his life mastering the talents that his sister was granted naturally, and others that allow him to manipulate circumstances and get his way more often than not.
The warlock dared to fall in love one, but it seems a curse of the Darkwillows to remain loveless. Her name was Angelica. A young enchantress at the magic college they attended. When she died, Elliot's icicle heart turned to stone and he will likely never recover.
Without Angelica to distract him, Elliot returned to his traitorous plotting with full force, but he couldn't keep tabs on Julianna at the same time. She was flighty and impulsive, he needed to focus so he let her do what she pleased for the time being.
He's recently acquired an alliance that threatens to put an end to his game, with him as the victor. His pieces are in place, and he only needs his pawns to cooperate.

He left college in Sacramento to return to Valesport at his mother's request. She just couldn't quite get things together without her husband, and it seemed that his sister's futures ranked above his. Valesport University was good enough, he resigned. Would just have to modify the nature of his degree. Forensic science came easy to him, for no particular reason, and adding a double major in metaphysical science was just for fun. He'd never expected he'd actually be able to put both degrees to use at one time.
He considered it pretty lucky.
Grayson was sexually assaulted when an undercover assignment went very wrong in Brighton. He doesn't like to talk about it.
Faerie charms wear off eventually and then you're just left with the pain. Unable to control your thoughts or your body, unable to stop someone else from controlling your thoughts and your body.
Grayson's husband left him. He doesn't like to talk about it.
Apparently, worse than dealing with the aftereffects of a traumatic experience is being the spouse of someone dealing with the aftereffects of a traumatic experience. Grayson found that he did not like to be touched a certain way, found that he couldn't sleep at night and that he couldn't stop washing his hands. It was difficult for Nathaniel to accept the person his husband had become. This man who didn't smile, this man who didn't look at him the way he had before. But Nathaniel had always been selfish.
Grayson got better. He's not sure if he misses Nathaniel. He doesn't like to talk about it.
Therapy and medication didn't turn Grayson into the man he had been before, but he washes his hands a little less and he smiles a little more. He doesn't go to Brighton.
Grayson found comfort in a woman with wild hair, an a wilder attitude. He doesn't like to talk about it.
She smokes too many cigarettes, and always disappears in the middle of the night. She smells like cheap perfume and runs acrylic nails through his hair just to mess up the curls. She is not good for him. He forgets to take his medication. He leaves Valesport more often than he would like to find her again. He should have arrested her when he had the chance.
