I haven't read any Mary Balogh in a while, but I really liked the Bedwyn series (wuuuulfriiiiic siiiigh) and in general when something seems rapey or awful in her books it's because it's supposed to be. She can get a little too intense for me sometimes if I just want some fluff, but in the Bedwyn series that isn't really a problem.

I like Gail Carriger for steampunk, I have a boxed set of the Parasol Protectorate.

Ever since the Duchess War Courtney Milan has been my favorite though, I have never read a historical romance novel with SUFFRAGETTES and EVOLUTIONISTS and PEOPLE OF COLOR and CHUBBY LADIES and ENTHUSIASTIC CONSENT and I mean there's a girl with epilepsy who falls in love with an Indian guy and it is so cute??

My mom is a big fan of the Outlander series and I enjoyed them well enough, but they are so fucking long and she takes herself so fucking seriously and everyone gets raped eventually it's just exhausting

Really...some wicked hybrid of her and Meljean Brook and a handful of sexy sci-fi romance authors whose stuff can be hit or miss so I won't bore you all with my ridiculous and very specific lists--and just keep the genes for the good ones instead. O.o And more on topic, for period...I'm also pretty much "favorite books", rather than authors.

Haha, when I mentioned doing a thread with a college class a few people mentioned their professor characters or desire to play professors. So now I'm imagining professors on a faculty retreat doing trust falls and shit.

Edit: I don't have a problem with dubcon/noncon necessarily, it's the handling of it. Like, if the author clearly is not intending to write a rape scene, but it's clearly a rape scene. If that makes sense. I like to know that the author knows that this is not a good or romantic thing basically? I sometimes have trouble with roleplayers in the same way, for instance if I think we're doing a scene about misogyny and the banality of evil but it turns out the person I'm playing with thinks we're doing a scene about putting uppity bitches in their place, it kind of... ruins it.

... but if anyone tries to get on Marcel Nadia will destroy them and if someone tries to seduce Nadia Marcel will cry probably. Or else be like "it's okay honey I know you are a lot of woman and you have needs and I won't stop you uwu;;" and Nadia's like "??? what the fuck are you talking about"
