The Setting of Valesport - KittyUnpretty - 11-06-2014

The city of Valesport is coastal, located in the northeastern United States. It is separated into northern and southern halves by a river flowing in from the ocean. The buildings get older nearer to the river, and the northern half is wealthier than the southern. It is a city that smells of saltwater, with crumbling brick surrounded in equal measure by glassy high rises and trees as old as the nation.

A prestigious university is located in the northern half of the city, and though Valesport University is renowned for its academics, the Valesport Whales are widely considered to be the worst college football team in the country. The other teams do not fare much better, though the lacrosse team saw brief success before losing several star players to wild animal attacks. Athletes thus tend to consider the college cursed, and the best avoid it.

Crime is rampant in southern Valesport, and the police have been accused of making the problems worse instead of better. Zero tolerance policies and minimum sentencing laws trap residents in a cycle of poverty, and police crackdowns have backfired, with communities having more faith in extrajudicial justice.

Little Vietnam, far to the south, has flourished in recent years. The immigrant community has quickly turned it into one of the wealthier neighborhoods in the south, but they tend also to be extremely insular. They, too, prefer to handle legal issues within their community rather than involving the police.

There are monsters lurking in the shadows at night, but only some of them aren't entirely human. Lycanthropes, Vampires, Witches, all have an unspoken agreement with the local government. They have dwelt in this city for as long as mortal men, and so long as they keep their business to themselves, mortal men do not interfere. They are not above the law, and the law will not hesitate to hold communities accountable for the crimes of individuals.

Tsundoku is a bookstore at 23 First Street run by a man currently calling himself Jean Cernunnos. Characters with a love of good books or in need of a tome to satisfy a quest will find themselves well-served here. Characters with a weakness for pale pretentious eccentrics may find themselves well-served in other respects.
