Just watching and reading this thread is amusing XD

Haha, I could have made it private but I thought it would amuse you guys to see me trying to get new features to work. Smile

Pretty sure the login issue I'm having (and other people are probably having, too) is related to the current lack of SSL. I can't generate an SSL certificate on my phone, so it's going to have to wait until someone cleans the snow off the dish at my house. I've submitted a ticket to the forums host, anyway, in case that's not the problem.

I thought the switch to a paid service would be a hassle but so far the only issues have all been related to the domain.

The redirect to forums.net mostly seems to happen on mobile, which is weird and confusing. I got us an SSL certificate, but based on the fact that my browser required me to make an exception it doesn't seem to be working.

Y'alls feel free to keep me updated on whether you need to make browser security exceptions or whether you see "forums.net" in the URL at any point, but overall I'd say the transition is as complete as it's getting.

I see forums.net, and when I remove the 'forums' part manually to go to alonimi.net, Chrome tells me you're trying to steal my information and I shouldn't trust you.

Ugh, really annoyed that I went through all that SSL trouble just to have it act like a dick. I'm going to try and get it sorted, but until then you just have to ignore the warning. Firefox makes it easy by clicking 'I understand the risks', at which point you add it to a list of trusted sites and never fuck with it again. Under Chrome, when it gives you the warning, hit 'advanced' and then 'proceed to alonimi.net'. You'll have to do this every time you start Chrome, unless you want to manually install the certificate.

Quote:You can avoid the message for trusted sites by installing the certificate.
This can be done by clicking on the warning icon in the address bar, then click
Certificate Information -> Details Tab -> Export...
Save the certificate.

Use Chrome's Preferences -> Under The Hood -> Manage Certificates -> Import.
On the "Certificate Store" screen of the import, choose "Place all certificates in the following store" and browse for "Trusted Root Certification Authorities." Restart Chrome.

I spent entirely too long overthinking how to edit the navigation menu. We now have a dedicated rules page and a privacy policy. The search page and members list are still accessible, but it didn't seem necessary to have them listed in the bar since we are a small forum. Still working on getting a proper registration page made.

Edited the new registrant messages to - hopefully - better detect trolls attempting to join, and encourage lurkers to at least chat in the OOC.

Still can't get my official @alonimi.net emails working, maybe because the nameservers are being handled by a third party.

Once I have extra time I'm going to work on editing the icon images for the text editor, because I think the default ones are ugly. Also might end up asking if there's a way to create custom keyboard shortcuts, because not being able to go through posts with j/k irritates me.

So far it looks like we won't be exceeding 50k pageviews for the month, which means no extra charge on the bill. Hooray!

Gonna start putting 'new forum' updates here

the conversion to smf lost a bunch of post contents in more complex posts (i'd previously only been checking general chat so imagine my chagrin when i checked a fucking rp post and it was gone)

everything is still unencrypted in the original database though so it shouldn't be too big of an issue, just need to figure out what bbcode specifically is making the converter shit itself

worst case scenario I either strip all formatting before the move, OR i manually edit in posts?? idk we'll see

if i can't get some of the old tags working, fixing uala's posts is gonna be hell
